In 1936 Sinox, a dinitro selective weed killer, was introduced and widely used, not only in cereal crops but in peas, onions, flax, and other important crops. In the early forties a private dealer in the Salinas Valley of California discovered the selective herbicidal use of stove oil in carrot crops. As war conditions made labor scarce and military demands called for increased production, this proved a great boon to the vegetable growers.

Use Selective weed killer and defoliant, fruit drop control. 

Its water-soluble sodium and triethylamine salts are preemergence selective weed killers effective against annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds in maize, soybeans and horticultural crops. 

They have a lower biological activity and persistence than the aryl-dialkyl ureas discussed above, but their selectivity is greater. These derivatives can safely be used as selective weed killers in sensitive crops. 

Chlorsulfuron is the active ingredient in Du Pont Glean Weed Killer. A very important feature of this new selective herbicide compound is its very high herbicidal activity at very low application rates. The compound controls most broad-leaved weeds in small grains at 10-40 g/ha. It is nonvolatile and is active due to uptake through both foliage and root system.

Herbicides are used to kill plants. Sodium chlorate, NaC103 and sodium arsenite, Na3As03, were commonly used as weed killers in the first half of the twentieth century, but inorganic arsenic compounds, in particular, are toxic to mammals. Organic herbicides are now used. They are much more toxic to certain types of plants than to others, so they can be used as selective weedkillers. Atrazine, which is a member of a class of herbicides called the triazines, is widely used to kill weeds in cornfields. The triazines contain six-membered rings with alternating carbon and nitrogen atoms. The effects of atrazine on human health are not yet clear.
