Weathering durability

The increasing use of siliconized coatings for weather durability caused severe masking problems for the all-metal, filter mesh-like catalyst elements available in the 1970s. Interest in catalytic afterburners increased when dispersed-phase precious metal—alumina-on-ceramic honeycomb catalysts offered economically attractive results.

Silicones appear in various compositions from thin fluids up to polymers that act as elastomers or thermosetting rigid plastomers. Silicones excel in weather durability, water repellency and in electrical and thermal properties. Silicone resins or coatings have heat-distortion temperatures up to 450 C. They are much used in aviation and the space industry as electrical insulation for motors, glue, protective coatings, a premium elastomer or as additives in construction. 

The physics of RAM is well described by the Fresnel reflection and transmission equations. The material composite is driven by appHcation, and includes concerns such as weight, weather durability, flexibility, stability, life cycle, heat resistance, and cost. 

To account for the poor reproducibility in accelerated aging, statistical approaches have been proposed, such as the nonparametric statistics which relies on performance comparison with a control material. The control material should be as similar as possible to the tested polymer in terms of structures, size, and shape, and its weathering durability should be well established in the specified exposure test. One useful approach to reduce error analysis was to compare a test property, not as a function of time or absorbed radiation, but relative to another...
