Water hold down

A tank was installed in a concrete-lined pit. The pit was then filled with sand, and a layer of concrete 6 in. thick w as put over the top. Water accumulated in the pit, and the buoyancy of the tank was sufficient to break the holding-down bolts and push it through the concrete covering.

Another kind of underground storage reservoir is called an aquifer. An aquifer is an underground rock structure holding large quantities of water. The. iindergiound lock is poious and penneable The. pole, spaces aie filled with w ater, and impermeable rock covers the porous rock. Wells are drilled into such formations, and gas is forced into the pores under pressure. As [he gas pressure increases, the gas pushes the water farther down into the porous rock, making room for the gas.

Try not to get any water on the gel side because this makes the gel very sticky, which causes problems when the strip is being rolled onto the glass plate. If the gel side does get wet, sometimes the situation can be saved by dabbing the water gently with a paper towel. Take care not to touch the paper to the gel. If you know you have sticky gels, then hold down the strips at the basic end while rolling. 

All fume hoods should have a water wash-down system. Each hood should be washed at the end of the day to prevent acid build-up and the resulting degradation of air ducts. The wash-down water is collected and re-circulated several times prior to discharge to the holding tanks. The wash-down water usually is acidic (pH <2) and needs to be neutralized daily. Eventually, solids will accumulate in the wash-down water container and should be flushed to the holding tanks.

Biofilm formation at the air-water interface. The bathtub ring often formed at the air-water interface around the sides of the basin is likely to be a biofilm due to microbial activity. This film acts like a trap and is known to concentrate caesium and other radioactive isotopes contained in the basin water. This biofilm should be removed mechanically by wet brushing, using water to hold down any airborne activity. A 35% solution of hydrogen peroxide has proven effective in suppressing microbial activity and could be used to assist in biofilm removal without corrosive attack on aluminium alloys.

The other end of the soap molecule remains immersed in the water, holding firmly to water molecules and acting like a molecular link to allow the water to carry the grease down the drain. 

Two main hypotheses have been advanced to explain the faecal bulking properties of fibre. The water-holding idea, mentioned above, is probably the most widely held view. In addition, it was suggested by Williams and Olmsted in 1936 that the way in which fibre increased faecal weight was through an effect of its metabolites, the short-chain fatty acids (acetic, propionic and butyric). They noted that dietary fibre was broken down in the gut and that the increased faecal weight was associated with an increased faecal excretion of short-chain fatty acids.
