Water history

After the stochastic nature of hydrate crystal nucleation, the quantification of the hydrate growth rate provides some relief for modeling hydrate formation. However, only a limited amount of accurate data exist for the crystal growth rate after nucleation. Most of the nucleation parameters (displacement from equilibrium conditions, surface area, agitation, water history, and gas composition) continue to be important in hydrate growth. [Pg.150]

Many stages of the water cycle are described by specific information implanted into surface water and groundwater. Yet, field hydrochemists have limited access to the water, being able to measure and sample it only at single points—wells and springs. Their task is to reconstruct the complete water history. An NIR method has been developed for measuring the hardwood content of bleached hardwood and the lignin content of vmbleached hardwood pulp. Work has also been carried out using NIR reflectance spectra of hardwoods to discriminate between the different species. Using a Fourier transform NIR instrument carbonate measurements have been made on soil samples. NIR analysis of forest humus samples has provided satisfactory calibrations for microbial basal respiration, based on the organic polymer content of the humans. Another important isotope for studying the water-history of Venus is °Ar. The atmospheric abundance of " Ar is only 25% of the radiogenic gas produced inside Venus. This may imply that Venus is not thoroughly degassed and its interior has not been dried over time. Once production commences, data such as reservoir pressure, cumulative production, GOR, water cut and fluid contact movement are collected, and may be used to history match the simulation model. This entails adjusting the reservoir model to fit the observed data. The updated model may then be used for a more accurate prediction of future performance. The reports were that water condensed from the vapor phase into 10-100-/im quartz or pyrex capillaries had physical properties distinctly different from those of bulk liquid water. Confirmations came from a variety of laboratories around the world (see the August 1971 issue of Journal of Colloid Interface Science), and it was proposed that a new phase of water had been found many called this water polywater rather than the original Deijaguin term, anomalous water. There were confirming theoretical calculations (see Refs. 121, 122) Eventually, however, it was determined that the micro-amoimts of water that could be isolated from small capillaries was always contaminated by salts and other impurities leached from the walls. The nonexistence of anomalous or poly water as a new, pure phase of water was acknowledged in 1974 by Deijaguin and co-workers [123]. There is a mass of fascinating anecdotal history omitted here for lack of space but told very well by Frank [124]. [Pg.248]

As a somewhat anecdotal aside, there has been an interesting question as to whether gold is or is not wet by water, with many publications on either side. This history has been reviewed by Smith [119]. The present consensus seems to be that absolutely pure gold is water-wet and that the reports of non wetting are a documentation of the ease with which gold surface becomes contaminated (see Ref. 120, but also 121). Small organisms frequently become embedded within corrosion products and deposits. The organisms may make up a sizable fraction of the deposit and corrosion product.
