Water As a standard

The basic design of the experiment consisted of placing a preweighed sample of material adjacent to an equivalent preweighed sample of water as a standard in the center of a 700 Watt MWO. Each sample was tested under various combinations of power settings (10, 30, 50, 80 and 100%) and heating times (20, 60, 150, 300 sec.). [Pg.514]

Room temperatures are seldom at exactly 20 "C or 25 C. How can you make a set of refractive index measurements, say at 23 C, and be sure they are correct (Hint use water as a standard)... [Pg.48]

The facts given above and the close parallel between 7/s values and the three acidity functions—%H2S04, IIQ and (H0 + log [H+]) suggest that linear relationships may be found which would permit the estimation of otherwise inaccessible H0 values or AHS values. This was indeed done in order to estimate the H0 acidity of fluorosulfuric acid (Fig. 3) and HSO3F—SbF5 with independent corroboration of the former value within 1 3 H0 unit (Arnett et al., 1972b). Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any objective treatment of such data which would yield reliable thermodynamic properties for ionization of weak bases in water as a standard state. [Pg.124]

The amphoteric character of water offers a way to standardize the strength of acids or bases. For that purpose, we consider how an acidic or basic substance reacts with water as a standard reaction partner following the general scheme Ai + H2O Bi + HsO. This equilibrium is characterized by an equilibrium constant K, the acid dissociation constant. Often the common logarithm of Ka, pfCA, is used. The corresponding formulation of the law of mass action is given Eq. (2.22). [Pg.44]

The proton transport was further probed by NMR using water as a standard, and the number of water molecules was determined by H spin counting. It was determined that the number of waters per H, 2, varied between 6 and 8 from 20 to 100°C. This compares to a 2 = 22 for Nafion 117 [179] showing that this P (SiWll-75 V-co-BA-co-HDDA) film requires less water per H" " to achieve a higher (7 at 100% RH. However, on a functional group basis the film uptakes the same amount of water as a PFSA ionomer. Pulsed-field gradient spin echo (PGSE) NMR [180] was used to determine the self-diffusion coefficients, D, of protons in the polymer. For the P(SiWll-75 V-co-BA-co-HDDA) film at 100% RH and 20°C... [Pg.162]

Precipitation gravimetry continues to be listed as a standard method for the analysis of Mg + and S04 in water and wastewater analysis. A description of the procedure for Mg + was discussed earlier in Method 8.1. Sulfate is analyzed by precipitating BaS04, using BaCb as the precipitant. Precipitation is carried out in an... [Pg.248]

Inorganic Analysis Complexation titrimetry continues to be listed as a standard method for the determination of hardness, Ca +, CN , and Ch in water and waste-water analysis. The evaluation of hardness was described earlier in Method 9.2. The determination of Ca + is complicated by the presence of Mg +, which also reacts with EDTA. To prevent an interference from Mg +, the pH is adjusted to 12-13, precipitating any Mg + as Mg(OH)2. Titrating with EDTA using murexide or Eri-ochrome Blue Black R as a visual indicator gives the concentration of Ca +. [Pg.327]

Specific gravityis the ratio of the weight of a given volume of oil to the weight of the same volume of water at a standard temperature, usually 60°F (15.6°C). This method of measuring density and gravity first arose as a result of the need to define the character of products in more detail it was natural to extend the measure to cmde oils in general. [Pg.202]

A listing of compounds evaluated in the laboratory as cockroach repeUents summarizes 872 synthetic compounds out of 901 bioassayed from 1953 to 1974 (43). EenchoHc acid [512-77-6] (3-isopropyl-1-methylcyclopentanecarboxyHc acid) has been used as a standard repeUent in tests conducted by placing 20 cockroaches in a glass crystallizing dish without food and water and offering them a choice of two cardboard shelters, one of which was treated with 1 or 2 mL of a 1% solution of the candidate in acetone. Counts were made daily for seven days. [Pg.118]

Beryllium Oxalate. BeryUium oxalate trihydrate [15771 -43-4], BeC204 -3H20, is obtained by evaporating a solution of beryUium hydroxide or oxide carbonate in a slight excess of oxaHc acid. The compound is very soluble in water. Beryllium oxalate is important for the preparation of ultrapure beryllium hydroxide by thermal decomposition above 320°C. The latter is frequentiy used as a standard for spectrographic analysis of beryUium compounds. [Pg.76]

Standard materials for the compressor are cast iron for the cylinder and carbon steel for the shaft. The rotor parts are steel. The liquid pistf f compressor has another feature that compensates for low efficiency, using special materials of construction and compatible liquid compr sant, unusual or difficult gases may be compressed. By using titanium internal materials and water as a compressant, gases containing wet chlorine can be compressed. This is a very difficult application for most o( the other compressor types. [Pg.131]

Another approach is therefore to adopt a model process that is very similar to the reactions of interest. Swain and Scott ° selected as a standard reaction the nucleophilic substitution reaction of methyl bromide in water at 25°C. [Pg.358]

The pH of the mixture was adjusted to 7.5 by adding a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. After being washed twice with diethyl ether, the reaction solution was acidified to pH 2 with dilute hydrochloric acid and extracted with ether. The ether solution containing the free penicillin was washed twice with water and then extracted with 50 ml of N potassium bicarbonate solution. After freeze drying of the obtained neutral solution, the potassium salt of o-azidobenzylpenicillin was obtained as a slightly colored powder (11.2 grams, 54% yield) with a purity of 55% as determined by the hydroxylamine method (the potassium salt of penicillin G being used as a standard). [Pg.120]

In the Heck reactions discussed above it was essential to use polar aprotic solvents such as acetonitrile or DMF if high regioselectivity was to be achieved. In other Heck couplings the use of water as a solvent has recently gained attention. The advantages of water compared with standard organic solvents are many - it is, for example, cheap and nontoxic - but its usefulness extends only over a number of well-defined applications, partly because of problems with the solubility of the reactants and catalysts. The development of aqueous catalytic systems is, consequently, an important field [21]. [Pg.383]

Although the amperometric titrimetric method has been accepted as a standard method for the determination of total residual chlorine in chlorinated effluents [2], recent reports [3,4] have suggested that in the case of chlorinated waters, significant errors may occur if certain precautions are not taken. Furthermore, somewhat opposing views were presented in these reports on what the optimal procedure might be. [Pg.121]
