Considering the limitations presented thus far that are inherent in interpreting data reported in the literature, perhaps the pattern of response rather than the individual measurements is of importance in predicting functionality. Information will be presented that relates water absorption to other functional properties and examines the effect of the physical and chemical environment on the water absorption response patterns of various protein ingredients. Transfer of the aquatic animals, after absorption of the cyclodiene, to insecticide-free water showed variations in elimination pattern related with the chemical as well as its concentration in the body. It follows a somewhat biphasic response, there is initial rapid elimination of high concentration followed by a slow elimination at lower body concentrations (Fig. 3)(21,22, 23). Xenopus, even at low body levels of cis-chlordane, eliminate it at slightly faster rate than fish. Photo-cis-chlordane seems to be eliminated at a faster rate than cis-chlordane by both goldfish and bluegill (Table 2). The elimination of photo-cis-chlordane by goldfish and bluegill and of photodieldrin by blue-gill shows a biphasic response (Fig. 3). [Pg.43]

Also, Schmidt et al. (2005) found a significant increase in root hair density by working with Arabidopsis thaliana, which were treated with water extractable humic substances (WEHS), suggesting that these substances induce a nutrient acquisition response that favors the uptake of nutrients via an increase in the absorptive surface area. Furthermore, a phenotypical analysis of an array of mutants harbouring defects in root epidermal patterning revealed that root hair density of the ttg and gl2 mutants, defective in cell specification, was significantly modified, indicating an effect at/or downstream of the determination of the cells. [Pg.313]
