Wall paintings cleaning

As in many other monasteries, the Convento de la Peregrina was closed in the 15th century following outbreaks of the pestilence that ravaged Europe. In 1956, the chapel was reopened and the wall paintings cleaned from the lime wash that covered them from the pestilence times.

To summarise the problems, one has to consider that any material introduced into wall paintings for consolidation, cleaning or any other purpose may react with ions already present at site and cause new, and even worse, problems.

The walls are cleaned and, if possible, the paint is removed. Any loose brick is removed and replaced. 

If painted, covered with hard gloss paint to facilitate cleaning and minimize impregnation of finish wall and ceiling materials with explosives particles. 

Construction materials must be nonabsorbent and easily cleaned or decontaminated. Seamless flooring avoids cracks from which spilled chemicals can contribute a significant pollution burden to the laboratory air. Epoxy paint should be used for interior walls. Dropped ceilings should be made of nonabsorbent material such as enameled metal. Hoods and sinks should be fabricated of stainless steel. Wood or other porous surfaces must be avoided. 

As with cocaine, users go on binges, or runs, and then crash. During these high periods, they may become extremely hyperactive, cleaning house or painting walls nonstop. One woman vacuumed her apartment, then dumped the dirt back on the floor and vacuumed again.

The surfaces of the lead shielding must be smooth and easy to clean. This can be achieved by painting the surface of the wall. 

Floors Commonly used floor finishes for biopharmaceutical clean rooms include sheet vinyl installed using heat-welded or chemically fused seams to provide a seamless surface. Troweled epoxy and epoxy paint (Figure 11) have also found wide use. Compatibility of the floor material with solvents, chemicals, and cleaning agents to be used in the room must be considered. A minimum 4-in. cove at the junction of floor and walls is recommended to facilitate cleaning. Some modular wall systems have a recess or offset that permits sheet vinyl to be installed in a manner that creates a seamless junction between floor and wall. When a stick-built approach is used, care should be taken to design cleanable intersections of walls and floors (Figure 12).
