Walkway surface

ANSI BlOl.O, Walkway Surface Auditing Guideline for the Measurement of... [Pg.31]

It is led by a 15-member Board of Directors representing product manufacturers, insurance underwriters, trade associations, and independent consultants. Its primary standard development includes the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) BlOl committee for the measurement of the coefficient of friction of various walkway surfaces to determine how slippery their surfaces are and therefore may contribute to an incident. It recently has introduced a listing of products for rating walkway surfaces resistance to slips and also can undertake testing of existing surfaces for slip resistance ratings. See also Slips, Trips, and Falls. [Pg.202]

A high COF means the surface is not very slippery and there is little concern of an incident occurring. However, a low COF means the floor surface should be examined, as well as the cleaning methods used and the cleaning applications in order to improve the COF. Static coefficient of friction (SCOF) relates to the traction between a person s foot or shoe sole and the walking surface. We can define SCOE as the relative force that resists the tendency of the shoe or foot to slide along a walkway surface. ADA reconunends a minimum of 0.6 on level walking surfaces and 0.8 on ramps. OSHA requires an SCOF 0.5 in all areas. Slip resistance relates to a combination of factors including type of surface, and care and maintenance procedures with the presence of foreign materials between the foot/shoe sole and the walking surface. The AIA s Academy of Architecture for Healthcare states that floor materials shall be readily cleanable and appropriate for each location. Install water-resistant floors in all food preparation areas and in locations containing baths or showers. [Pg.97]

In tunnels 16 feet or more in diameter, hanging walkways shall be provided from the face to the man lock as high in the tunnel as practicable, with at least 6 feet of head room. Walkways shall be constructed of noncombustible material. Standard railings shall be securely installed throughout the length of all walkways on open sides in accordance with Subpart M of this part. Where walkways are ramped under safety screens, the walkway surface shall be skidproofed by cleats or by equivalent means. [Pg.705]

Are standard guardrails provided wherever aisle or walkway surfaces are elevated more than 30 inches (76.20 centimeters) above any adjacent floor or the ground ... [Pg.174]

A1264.3 Technical Report Using Variable Angle Tribometers (VAT) for Measurement of the Slip Resistance of Walkway Surfaces... [Pg.34]

Static coefficient of ffiction of polish-coated flooring surface is measured by the James machine. The method measures coefficient of friction between test surface (e.g., shoe soles or heel materials) and walkway surface. Floor surfaces, which have static coefficient of friction of less than 0.5, are non-hazardous. Static coefficient is obtained from the recording chart at the point the recorded curve changes to a vertical line. The method of preparation of test panels is described in the separate standard. The James machine is calibrated by the use of a standard leather and board according to the procedure described in a separate standard. ... [Pg.38]

A portable inclinable articulated strut slip tester, PIAST, was developed to test sole and heel materials against planar walkway surfaces, or walkway surrogates in a laboratory or field under dry, wet, or contaminated conditions. Each measurement is specific to the conditions under which it is conducted but a variety... [Pg.38]
