Knitted fabric constmction characterization is discussed in ASTM D3887. Characterization of knitted fabrics includes yield (area per weight), width, length, and yam count (number of courses and wales per unit length). The type of knit is also specified, eg, warp knit or weft knit. Yarn analysis may be difficult on account of problems in raveling individual yams from the knitted stmcture, particularly warp knits.

Other variations of catalytic and noncatalytic coal Hquefaction schemes were also developed (27,28). Additionally, bench-scale and semiworks systems have been operated in Germany by researchers at Bergbau-Forschung in Essen (29). A 2.5 ton per day pilot plant is being operated by the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom at Point of Ayr in Wales (30). This facdity is notable for the use of semibatch or candle filters for removal of mineral matter and unreacted coal from the primary Hquefaction products. 

Developments in the metallurgy of copper or its alloys were mentioned in 1556 in De MetalBca where the process of copper ore was described by Agricola (see also Copper alloys). About that time, smelting operations commenced at Mansfield, Germany, and at the Swansea smelter in Wales. Both smelters employed successive oxidations and reductions to eliminate iron and sulfur. The process used in the Swansea smelter is similar to modern techniques.

Although winter wheat is grown on more land than any other crop in England and Wales, it is not usually grown continuously, because of problems from pests and diseases. Break crops are grown to interrupt the build-up of these problems, so we need to look at the behaviour of nitrogen under these and other crops, but much less information is available than for winter wheat.

By polymerising styrene in solution many problems associated with heat transfer and the physical movement of viscous masses are reduced, these advantages being offset by problems of solvent recovery and the possibility of chain transfer reactions. In 1955 Distrene Ltd started a plant at Barry in South Wales for the production of styrene by such a solution polymerisation process and some details have been made available. The essential details of this process are indicated by Figure 16.7.
