Vision verification system

The advent of vision verification systems is now competing with bar codes in the security field. These systems read the preprinted part number and either compare it with a pre-loaded independently obtained code or the whole system can be fully computerised and the reader told what component to expect and read as it passes. 

In contrast to a typical industrial robot, the laboratory robot must be flexible and user-programmable. Many laboratory robots incorporate tactile sensing and other verification methods. However, vision capabilities are virtually nonexistent at this time. Laboratory robots range in price from 25,000- 100,000 with typical system prices averaging 40, 000- S0,000. 

To put this into context, when bar code readers were just one part of an integrated quality system (e.g. supplier count verification, QC count checks on incoming deliveries, line receipt checks, line cleandown checks and reconciliation), only the function of the bar code readers needed to be the focus of attention. As a stand-alone system, full validation/qualification becomes a necessity and takes the issue away from the line and onto technical support (i.e. QA). Just as with the earlier vision inspection equipment, qualification is not just of the bar code reader and the detection performance, but also of the component quality, e.g. 

Indeed, what is needed is a vision on a long term basis. The ideas proposed here, the verification of which will need the commitment for 2-4 decades of research, could be such a vision with considerable attraction for the best young physicists.
