The disadvantages of wet scrubbers are that they produce a visible steam plume, and liquid and solid effluents, which can cause disposal problems. Where low sulfur fuels are used, the effluent may contain calcium hydroxide which in one installation has been found to give pH values as high as 11.3 the sludge is also alkaline and may present disposal problems. Where high sulfur fuels are used, the effluent contains dissolved salts, mainly calcium sulfate and possibly calcium bisulfite. The latter could lead to a biological oxygen demand. [Pg.387]

In a 500 ml. three-necked flask, fitted with a reflux condenser and mechanical stirrer, place 121 g. (126-5 ml.) of dimethylaniline, 45 g. of 40 per cent, formaldehyde solution and 0 -5 g. of sulphanilic acid. Heat the mixture under reflux with vigorous stirring for 8 hours. No visible change in the reaction mixture occurs. After 8 hours, remove a test portion of the pale yellow emulsion with a pipette or dropper and allow it to cool. The oil should solidify completely and upon boiling it should not smell appreciably of dimethylaniline if this is not the case, heat for a longer period. When the reaction is complete, steam distil (Fig. II, 41, i) the mixture until no more formaldehyde and dimethylaniline passes over only a few drops of dimethylaniline should distil. As soon as the distillate is free from dimethylaniline, pour the residue into excess of cold water when the base immediately solidifies. Decant the water and wash the crystalline solid thoroughly with water to remove the residual formaldehyde. Finally melt the solid under water and allow it to solidify. A hard yellowish-white crystalline cake of crude base, m,p. 80-90°, is obtained in almost quantitative yield. RecrystaUise from 250 ml. of alcohol the recovery of pure pp -tetramethyldiaminodiphenylmethane, m.p. 89-90°, is about 90 per cent. [Pg.987]

To alleviate the air pollution problem associated with charcoal kilns and furnaces, the gases from the kiln and furnaces are burned (see Airpollution CONTROLMETHODS). The water droplets from steam Jets are normally charged, and discharges sometimes occur from the Jets to neighboring grounded pipes. These discharges are of the corona type rather than true sparks and may be visible at night they look like small flames [2]. [Pg.293]

B. l-Bromo-2-fluorobenzene. Cautionl This step should be carried outm a hood because the PFS evolved on thermal decomposition of the diazonium salt is poisonous. The apparatus consists of a 1-1., three-necked, round-bottomed flask equipped with a thermometer, a condenser, a magnetic stirrer (optional), and a 250-ml. Erlenmeyer flask that is attached by means of a short rubber Gooch connecting tube. The dry powdered hexafluorophosphate salt is placed in the Erlenmeyer flask, and 300 ml. of heavy mineral oil is placed in the round-bottomed flask. The mineral oil is heated to 165-170° by means of an oil bath or electric heating mantle and maintained at this temperature while the salt is added rapidly in portions over a period of 30 minutes. The flask is cooled rapidly to room temperature, the side flask is removed, and 400 ml. of 10% aqueous sodium carbonate is added slowly through the condenser. The mixture is steam-distilled until no more oil is visible in the distillate. [Pg.13]

The stripping steam rate should be adjusted to maximize stripping that is, minimize hydrocarbon carry-under to the regenerator. In practice, the stripping steam rate should be increased until there is no visible decrease in regenerator temperatures, and cyclone loadings and sour water handling capability are not exceeded. [Pg.116]
