VINYL PYRROLIDINONE COPOLYMER

Polymer alloys were prepared by blending PE or its copolymer with lactams, then polymerizing the latter. For example, ethylene-vinyl pyrrolidinone copolymer, EVP, was blended with e-caprolactam for molding application ... [Pg.1671]

Copolymers. Vinyl acetate copolymenzes easily with a few monomers, e g, ethylene, vinyl chloride, and vinyl neodecanoate, which have reactivity ratios close to its own. Block copolymers of vinyl acetate with methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and vinyl pyrrolidinone have been prepared by copolymerization in viscous conditions, with solvents that are poor solvents for the vinyl acetate macroradical,... [Pg.1678]

Dispersancy Solution copolymers are comparatively easy to produce in dispersant form as copolymerization with an appropriate polar monomer is relatively straightforward. If the polar monomer is also a methacrylate, reactivity ratios are essentially the same and no special procedures are required to produce random copolymers. Commercial examples have included dimethyl (or diethyl)aminoethyl methacrylate [11], hydroxyethyl methacrylate [12] and dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylamide [13]. 2-Methyl-5-vinyl pyridine [14] has also been used commercially, reactivity ratios are such that it copolymerizes slightly faster than alkyl methacrylates. Although composition drift is not severe, it should be added in a programmed fashion if a uniform distribution is desired. V-vinyl pyrrolidinone, in contrast, copolymerizes very sluggishly with methacrylates and is best incorporated via a graft reaction [15], sometimes also grafted in combination with V-vinyl imidazole [16]. Since solution chemistry is used to produce dispersant polymethacrylates, like preparation of the base polymer, only relatively simple process modifications are necessary to produce dispersants commercially. [Pg.157]

Manufacture. The principal manufacturers of A/-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone are ISP and BASF. Both consume most of their production captively as a monomer for the manufacture of PVP and copolymers. The vinylation of 2-pyrrolidinone is carried out under alkaline catalysis analogous to the vinylation of alcohols. 2-Pyrrolidinone is treated with ca 5% potassium hydroxide, then water and some pyrrolidinone are distilled at reduced pressure. A ca 1 1 mixture (by vol) of acetylene and nitrogen is heated at 150—160°C and ca 2 MPa (22 atm). Fresh 2-pyrrolidinone and catalyst are added continuously while product is withdrawn. Conversion is limited to ca 60% to avoid excessive formation of by-products. The A/-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone is distilled at 70—85°C at 670 Pa (5 mm Hg) and the yield is 70—80% (8). [Pg.523]

Vinyl copolymers substituted with -OH, -0-R, -0C(0)-R, -C(0)-R, or -C5H4N groups have various practical applications, depending on their composition. These applications include uses in glues, lacquers, protective films, flocculent agents, various formulations in cosmetics (e.g. poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone-co-ethyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) is used in hair spray formulations, poly(1-ethenyl-2-pyrrolidinone-co-1-eicosene) is used as a pigment dispersant in cosmetics), etc. A number of pyrolysis studies were done on these materials [43], etc. Some thermal properties of a few common vinyl copolymers are summarized in Table 6.5.14. [Pg.333]

YNTHETIC HYDROGEL POLYMERS, first introduced in the early 1960s, made a major impact, initially in the soft contact lens field, and more recently in other biomedical or specialty applications. The first synthetic poly(2-hy-droxyethyl methacrylate) [poly(HEMA)] hydrogel developed by Wichterle (i) remains very important, as do its copolymers with monomers such as N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone, acrylic and methacrylic acids, glycerol methacrylate, various acrylamides, and alkoxyalkyl methacrylates. [Pg.61]
