Vinyl chloride packaging

Di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate is a liquid of low volatility, widely used as a plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) products, notably food films, as well as in other plastics and in a number of other minor applications, such as lubricants and cosmetics. Occupational exposure may occur by inhalation of di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate as an aerosol during its manufacture and its use. Meat-wrapping workers may be exposed while cutting poly(vinyl chloride) film across a heated cutter. Food is the major source of exposure of the general population to di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate because of migration from poly(vinyl chloride) packaging, particularly into fatty foods such as cheese and meat. [Pg.168]

Of the estimated 710,000 t consumed in 1990, 25% was used to produce vinyl chloride [75-01-4] monomer (VCM), 14% for vinyl acetate [108-05-4] monomer (VAM), 23% for butanediol, 14% for industrial use, and the balance to produce other products such as acryUc acid, synthetic mbber, chlorinated solvents, and acetylene black. The demand for PVC is expected to decrease as legislation limiting its use in packaging is pending. Consequentiy, VCM consumption will also suffer. [Pg.395]

Increasingly, plastics are being used as parenteral packaging (qv) materials. Plastics such as poly(vinyl chloride), polyethylene, and polypropylene are employed. However, plastics may contain various additives that could leach into the product, such as plasticizers (qv) and antioxidants. PermeabiUty of plastics to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor must be tested in the selection of plastic containers. Furthermore, the plastic should withstand sterilization. Flaking of plastic particles should not occur and clarity necessary for inspection should be present. [Pg.234]

Nearly all uses and appHcations of benzyl chloride are related to reactions of the active haUde substituent. More than two-thirds of benzyl chloride produced is used in the manufacture of benzyl butyl-phthalate, a plasticizer used extensively in vinyl flooring and other flexible poly(vinyl chloride) uses such as food packaging. Other significant uses are the manufacture of benzyl alcohol [100-51-6] and of benzyl chloride-derived quaternary ammonium compounds, each of which consumes more than 10% of the benzyl chloride produced. Smaller volume uses include the manufacture of benzyl cyanide [140-29-4], benzyl esters such as benzyl acetate [140-11-4], butyrate, cinnamate, and saUcylate, benzylamine [100-46-9], and benzyl dimethyl amine [103-83-8], and -benzylphenol [101-53-1]. In the dye industry benzyl chloride is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of triphenylmethane dyes (qv). First generation derivatives of benzyl chloride are processed further to pharmaceutical, perfume, and flavor products. [Pg.61]

IX lists the results of some of these experiments, comparing the nitrile materials with polyethylene, the most widely used plastic container material, and poly (vinyl chloride), which is being used for a number of food packaging applications. Note that in all instances there is an order of magnitude difference between the Lopac container and the other two. Vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) is the main substrate for the manufacture of polymers used as packaging materials for food. Since VCM is considered by lARC to be a human carcinogen, monomer levels in PVC food packaging materials are strictly controlled. To ensure a safe product, the residual content of VCM in the finished material or article is limited to one mg per kg in the final product (Council Directive 78/142/EEC). Furthermore, VCM should not be detectable in foodstuflfs. Commission Directives 80/766/EEC and 81/432/ EEC give the method of analysis for official control of the VCM level in food packaging materials and in foods - gas-phase chromatography using the headspace method, after dissolution or suspension of samples in N,N-dimethylacetamide. Multilayered materials can be readily formed using thermoforming including food packaging that may involve inclusion of layers of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers, PS, polyolefins, and/or copolymers of vinylene dichloride and vinyl chloride.
