The total scan area (TS A) is that portion of the slide to be scanned by the vidicon camera. The dimensions of the TSA cannot exceed the size of the cover slip (15 mm x 15 mm). For example, 10 mm x 10 mm is a commonly used dimension. A strip is a lateral (or vertical) portion of the TSA. For example, if a 20x objective lens is used, a strip would have the dimensions of about 10 mm x 200 p. A field represents a portion of a strip using the same example, it would have the dimensions of about 200 p x 200 p. Scattered patterns from polymers may be photographed using a Polaroid instant camera (Polaroid Land Film Holder 545). The scattered intensity can be quantitatively monitored by means of a two-dimensional Vidicon camera (1254 B, EG G Co.) coupled with a detector controller (Model 1216, EG G Co.). The analogue simal is digitized and analyzed on an DMA 111 (Optical Multichannel Analyzer) system. The scan rate is typically 30 ms for one-dimensional scan and about 0.5 to 1.5 s for two-dimensional mode depending on the number of pixels chosen for grouping. [Pg.268]

Particle size measurements were made using an UV-laser, shadow photographic technique. The particle sizing system displayed real-time droplet images onto a television monitor. The images (shadows) were obtained when a pulsed (30 times per second) UV-laser beam was directed through a spray scene onto a synchronized UV-sensitive vidicon camera/recorder. The narrow depth of field used by this system can record shadows from 300 in-focus droplets per second with a resolution down to approximately 0.3 /un in diameter. [Pg.119]

The furnace lens provides a 90° or 60° field of view in the same direction as the flame being blown from the burner. Operators can thus watch the complete flame (including length, shape, color, and direction) on the end of the pipe 12 feet away, the sidewalls, top, and bottom of the kiln, the clinker being formed, and the movement of material down the kiln. The camera s quartz lens can see 15-25 feet into the kiln, in contrast to the old vidicon cameras, which could only provide a hazy image over a distance of a few feet.
