Vibrio comma

Streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, gonococci, meningococci, Haemophilus influenzae, H. ducreyi, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis. Vibrio comma. Vibrio cholerae, E. coli, Pasteurella pestis. Shigella. 

Single-celled microscopic organism of various species, commonly found in cooling systems, causing fouling and other problems. Bacilli (rod shaped), vibrio (comma shaped), cocci (round shaped). Typically multiplies by binary fission, lacks chlorophyll.

Eremin et al. (1965) have precipitated carbohydrate material with ethanol after alkaline hydrolysis of cultures of Whitmore s bacillus Pseudomonas pseudomailer), Pasteurella pestis, and Vibrio comma, and have subjected these polyoses to infrared spectroscopy. All spectra had strong absorption at 1660 and 1550 cm the former was related to double-bond vibrations and the latter was associated with stretching vibrations of C—N. The latter absorption was almost completely absent in the spectrum of a complex from V. comma. Absorption at 970 cm (the C=C double bond in the trans position) and traces of absorption at 790 cm characteristic of the 1 — 3 bond were always present. A polysaccharide from the cell wall of P. pestis had a wide band at 1170-1000 cm the low intensity bands at 1190 and 1160cm indicated the presence of P—O—Me and P—O—Et groups. The spectrum of a complex from Whitmore s bacillus differed from the others by the presence of a band at 1735 cm due to esters of fatty acids. 

Vibrio comma neuraminidase was inactivated by Ca +-binding anions e.g. citrate, Hiedta, oxalate, phosphate, and tartrate), whereas the neuraminidases from Erysipelothrix insidiosa and Streptococcus viridans were not. Pyruvate and, to a lesser extent, citrate inactivated all the neuraminidases, but they did not interfere with the sites binding Ca + ions. 

In the microbial world, occurrence of sialidase appears mostly to be restricted to ortho- and to paramyxoviruses and to members of two major taxonomic orders of bacteria, Eubacteriales and Pseudomona-dales (for review, Drzeniek, 1972), but not entirely. Sialidase also has been uncovered in one of the Mycoplasmatales (gallisepticum, Sethi and Muller, 1972 Roberts, 1967), as well as in a structurally related L-phase variant of Vibrio comma, or cholerae (Madoff et aL, 1961) this latter belongs, however, to the Spirillaceae family of the aforementioned Pseudomonadales. Sialidase has been found also in a higher Protistan, Trichomonas foetus (Romanovska and Watkins, 1963) and in several strains of a fungus, Streptomyces albus (Myhill and Cook, 1972), of the order Actinomycetales.
