Vertical Spindle Mills

The vertical spindle mill (also known as SAM) uses a central vertical multistage mixer (Figure 7-23). Each stage consists of a number of wolfram carbide pins fixed on a hollow shaft. They provide horizontal stirring. This machine operates with feed smaller than 1 mm (16 mesh) for fine and rdtrafine wet or dry grinding. The units are small and compact and can be relocated within the plant. Maximum power is 75 kW per unit. [Pg.379]

Milling machines can generally be classified according to the orientation of the spindle, either vertical or hor-... [Pg.179]

There are many types and sizes of milling machines, but the most versatile in common use in the majority of workshops is the knee-and-column type, so called because the spindle is fixed in the column or main body and the table arrangement, mounted on a knee, is capable of movement in the longitudinal, transverse and vertical directions. [Pg.165]

The main elements of a typical knee-and-column horizontal milling machine are shown in Fig. 11.3. The elements of a vertical machine are the same except that the spindle head is mounted at the top of the column, as shown in Fig. 11.4. [Pg.166]

Describe how a milling cutter is directly mounted on the spindle of a vertical milling machine. [Pg.181]

Raise the knee to take a further cut and repeat until all the surface is produced at the correct radius. Since a vertical milling machine is used, an alternative method of taking a cut can be used by lowering the spindle. [Pg.171]
