Vanishing cream formulation

A device designed to determine the transport of an epidermal growth factor from a Pluronic gel, a Carbopol gel, and a vanishing cream base was shown capable of demonstrating formulation-dependent release kinetics [22], This device consists of a release cell which has a membrane to minimize release due to mechanical breakdown and is placed in a stirred and temperature-controlled receptor fluid. 

In another formulation, the each gram of 4% cream contains 40 mg hydroquinone USP, 80 mg padimate O USP, 30 mg dioxybenzone USP, and 20 mg oxybenzone USP in a vanishing-cream base of purified water USP, glycerol monostearate and polyoxyethylene stearate, oot-yldodecyl stearoyl stearate, glyceryl dilaurate, quater-nium-26, cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20, stearyl alcohol NF, propylene glycol USP, diethylaminoethyl stearate, polydimethylsiloxane, polysorbate 80 NF, lactic acid USP, ascorbic acid USP, hydroxyethyl cellulose, quatemium-14 and myristalkonium chloride, edetate disodium USP, and sodium metabisulfite NF. 

Skin creams are normally made of oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions. An emulsion is a colloidal dispersion of one liquid in another (see Chapter 11 for a discussion of colloids). It tries to soften and moisturize the skin at the same time. Cold creams are used in the removal of makeup and as moisturizers, while vanishing creams make the skin appear younger by filling in wrinkles. Polyethylene glycols are formulated into creams, lotions, jellies, and cakes to impart a skin-smoothing feel and moisturizing qualities. They are formulated into vanishing creams, brushless shaving creams, toothpastes, suntan lotions, hair shampoos and dressings, solid perfumes, and solid antiperspirants. 

In skin care products fatty acids are usually partially neutralized with alkaline or amine bases to create a mixture of soap and fatty acid which build a surfactant network to thicken the aqueous phase and also emulsify the oil droplets. The long chain fatty acids deployed for this purpose are normally a mixture of palmitic and stearic acid. A simple formulation for a vanishing skin cream contains about 20% of fatty acid and its potassium soap mixture and 80% water. Cetyl alcohol, glycol monostearate, and glycerol monostearate are common cosurfactants incorporated inside the network.
