A valve is a mechanical device that controls the flow of liquids, gases, or loose material through piping systems. There are many types of valves, including butterfly valves, gate valves, plug valves, ball valves, and check valves. [Pg.209]

Other common valve types include the quick-opening (globe) and the butterfly. Their characteristics are more a result of accident than design. Isolation valves being considered include gate valves, butterfly and ball valves. These valve types minimize system pressure drops when in the fully open position. The selected valve would need to be completely sealed from the space environment to prevent system leakage, with an external actuator to position the valve. A redundant actuator could be used to improve valve reliability and both actuators could be operated in parallel to free a sticking valve. The NRPCT does not have experience with solenoid operators on either the size valves proposed for the SNPP or at the temperatures proposed. The three most common types of valves for which lockout devices are available are gate, ball, and butterfly valves. Each is described in more detail below. [Pg.198]

Butterfly valve lockouts. The butterfly valve lockout functions in a similar manner to the ball valve lockout. The polypropylene lockout device is placed over the valve handle and secured with a padlock. This type of lockout has been commonly used in the bottling industry. [Pg.199]

Air and gaseous S02 in the required ratio enter Mixer 6 to mix fully with each other, and the resulting pseudo flue gas is divided into two equal streams to enter Absorber 7. The air flow rate is adjusted by a butterfly valve in the pipeline and measured with a Pitot tube-pressure difference meter and that of S02 by the rotameter 5. The total gas flow rate is also monitored by a wind velocity meter of DF-3 type at the gas outlet of the reactor. For each run, gas-samplings are made at both inlet and outlet of the reactor, and the S02 concentrations in the samples are measured with the Iodine-quantitative method, a standard and authentic method of determining the integral amount of S02 absorbed in the reactor. [Pg.173]

Solids Metering The control valves described earlier are primarily used for the control of fluid (liquid or gas) flow. Sometimes these valves, particularly the ball, butterfly, or sliding gate valves, are used to throttle dry or slurry solids. More often, special throttling mechanisms such as venturi ejectors, conveyers, knife-type gate valves, or rotating vane valves are used. The particular solids-metering valve hardware depends on the volume, density, particle shape, and coarseness of the solids to be handled. [Pg.76]

Manual and automatic valves of the diaphragm, butterfly, or ball type are commonly used of a construction suited to the application. Automatic valves may be actuated pneumatically, hydraulically, or electrically and where large engineered plants are concerned separate valves are ascribed to discrete functions. Smaller packaged units often employ a single multiport valve mounted on the top or the side of the vessel. [Pg.268]

The most widely used control valves for liquid and high pressure gas streams are the various sliding stem valves such as the bevel plug, V-port, parabolic plug, and for small flows the needle valve. For corrosive materials and slurries, pinch-type valves like the Saunders patent valves are used. Rotary stem valves include plug types and for gas flows butterfly valves, dampers, and louvers. [Pg.62]
