V rays

Barkla, originally interested mainly in v-ray scattering, discovered characteristic x-rays by an experimental method similar in principle to that described above. His experimental arrangement (Figure 1-7) is reminiscent of that used today in studies of the Raman effect. By using an absorber in the form of sheets (Figure 1-7) to analyze the scattered beam in the manner of Figure 1-4, he obtained results that clarified the earlier experiments described above.

Another growth area is the glass container industry. Cerium is used here to decolorize glass and to stabilize against solar-ization caused by U. V. rays. 

The most widely investigated optically active poly-acrylic-esters are the polymers of bomyl and menthyl acrylate and methacrylate in this case the monomers have been polymerized by radical polymerization using benzoyl-peroxide (135), A. I. B. N. (134, 135), y-rays (131, 135), U. V. rays (4) in the presence of benzoin (134), and by anionic polymerization using LiC4H9 (4, 135) or C6H5MgBr (134, 135) as catalyst. 

Two SI units refer to doses of radioactivity and these are used when calculating exposure levels for a particular source. The sievert (Sv) is the amount of radioactivity giving a dose in man equivalent to 1 gray (Gy) of v-rays 1 Gy = an energy absorption of 1 Jkg. The dose received in most biological experiments is a negligible fraction of the maximum permitted exposure limit. Conversion factors from older units are given in Table 35.3. 

As regards the production of alkaloid derivatives of lysergic acid, the present invention is not limited to the use of the described strains, but comprises also the mutants thereof, which may be obtained, e.g., by means of either a selection or a mutation by the action of U.V. rays or Roentgen rays or any other mutagenous substance or, particularly, by artificial infection of either embryos or grasses cultivated in vitro or plants of grasses cultivated both in vivo or in vitro and the said mutants are to be included in the definition of a new strain of Claviceps paspali Stevens and Hall.
