Emissions in excess of allotted levels are taxed. As an incentive to clean up emissions, companies that emit less than their allotted amounts are allowed to sell their unsued portions (so-called emission credits) to other companies. Several years ago, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), which operates 11 coal-fired electricity plants, purchased emission credits from Wisconsin Power and Light. The TVA bought pollution rights for the emission of 1.00 X 10 tons of sulfur dioxide per year at a price of 275 per ton. The wind trajectory method Is a supplement to other methods, not a replacement, as It has some weaknesses. Here is how SAL works Samples are received in a reception and storage room, then routed to the appropriate wet chemical analysis laboratory. There, they are analysed for uranium, thorium or plutonium content, and purified aliquots (portions of the sample) are prepared for the isotopic analysis of three elements. Isotopic analyses are performed routinely by mass spectrometry, and radiometric techniques are used for back-up. In Fig. 15 we present both XPS and UPS data for TmSe. In UPS, emission from the Tm(5conduction band and the Se(4p) valence band dominate that from the Tm(4/) shell.
