Saturated hydrocarbons were a problem because they have no functionality. It can be just as bad when a molecule has several functional groups aU apparently unrelated. Bisabolene (TM 384) has three double bonds, aU rather widely separated. Comment on possible strategies in terms of the hkely origin of each double bond and the probable order of events. 

Nonfaradaic Currents Faradaic currents result from a redox reaction at the electrode surface. Other currents may also exist in an electrochemical cell that are unrelated to any redox reaction. These currents are called nonfaradaic currents and must be accounted for if the faradaic component of the measured current is to be determined. 

At first glance, the contents of Chap. 9 read like a catchall for unrelated topics. In it we examine the intrinsic viscosity of polymer solutions, the diffusion coefficient, the sedimentation coefficient, sedimentation equilibrium, and gel permeation chromatography. While all of these techniques can be related in one way or another to the molecular weight of the polymer, the more fundamental unifying principle which connects these topics is their common dependence on the spatial extension of the molecules. The radius of gyration is the parameter of interest in this context, and the intrinsic viscosity in particular can be interpreted to give a value for this important quantity. The experimental techniques discussed in Chap. 9 have been used extensively in the study of biopolymers. 

This chapter contains one of the more diverse assortments of topics of any chapter in the volume. In it we discuss the viscosity of polymer solutions, especially the intrinsic viscosity the diffusion and sedimentation behavior of polymers, including the equilibrium between the two and the analysis of polymers by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). At first glance these seem to be rather unrelated topics, but features they all share are a dependence on the spatial extension of the molecules in solution and applicability to molecular weight determination. 

Minimum work for an ideal separation at first glance appears unrelated to the slender vertical vessel having a condenser at the top and a reboder at the bottom. The connection becomes evident when one calculates the work embedded in the heat flow that enters the reboder and leaves at the condenser. An ideal engine can extract work from this heat. 

Based on the frequency of occurrence for each residue in the sequence of 207 unrelated proteins (8). 

The conformation an amino acid adopts depends on the residues in its neighborhood. This was made clear from a study of identical pentapeptides in unrelated proteins which were observed to adopt the same conformation only 20% of the time (24). The effect that residues neighboring in sequence or in space have on the conformation is not well understood. 

Other agents are also used for the treatment of manic-depressive disorders based on preliminary clinical results (177). The antiepileptic carbamazepine [298-46-4] has been reported in some clinical studies to be therapeutically beneficial in mild-to-moderate manic depression. Carbamazepine treatment is used especially in bipolar patients intolerant to lithium or nonresponders. A majority of Hthium-resistant, rapidly cycling manic-depressive patients were reported in one study to improve on carbamazepine (178). Carbamazepine blocks noradrenaline reuptake and inhibits noradrenaline exocytosis. The main adverse events are those found commonly with antiepileptics, ie, vigilance problems, nystagmus, ataxia, and anemia, in addition to nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. Carbamazepine can be used in combination with lithium. Several clinical studies report that the calcium channel blocker verapamil [52-53-9] registered for angina pectoris and supraventricular arrhythmias, may also be effective in the treatment of acute mania. Its use as a mood stabilizer may be unrelated to its calcium-blocking properties. Verapamil also decreases the activity of several neurotransmitters. Severe manic depression is often treated with antipsychotics or benzodiazepine anxiolytics. 

An unusual reaction leading to a Ti—C bond is unrelated to those just discussed. Diphenylketene adds Ti(OR)4 (199) as follows ... 

Sufficient numbers of control animals should be employed. The use of such controls allows a determination of normal values for features monitored ki the study and background kicidence of pathology ki the population studied detection of the onset of adverse conditions, eg, infection, which are unrelated to, and detrimental to, the conduct of the study and deviation of monitored features between controls and exposed animals, which may kidicate a treatmentrelated effect. 

Over 250 analogues of the B vitamers have been reported (11,100). Nearly all have low vitamin B activity and some show antagonism. Among these are the 4-deshydroxy analogue, pyridoxine 4-ethers, and 4-amino-5-hydroxymeth5i-2-methyipyrimidine, a biosynthetic precursor to thiamine. StmcturaHy unrelated antagonists include dmgs such as isoniazid, cycloserine, and penicillamine, which are known to bind to pyridoxal enzyme active sites (4). 

Many of the by-products of microbial metaboHsm, including organic acids and hydrogen sulfide, are corrosive. These materials can concentrate in the biofilm, causing accelerated metal attack. Corrosion tends to be self-limiting due to the buildup of corrosion reaction products. However, microbes can absorb some of these materials in their metaboHsm, thereby removing them from the anodic or cathodic site. The removal of reaction products, termed depolari tion stimulates further corrosion. Figure 10 shows a typical result of microbial corrosion. The surface exhibits scattered areas of localized corrosion, unrelated to flow pattern. The corrosion appears to spread in a somewhat circular pattern from the site of initial colonization. 

U.S. consumption of carbon black in 1988 by various market sectors is shown in Table 6. About 90% of total consumption is in the mbber industry and 69% for tires. About 10% is consumed for other automotive products and 11% for mbber products unrelated to the automotive industry. The automotive industry accounts for 79% of consumption. Pigment appHcations account for about 10% of consumption, most of this for plastics and printing inks. Western Europe consumes 74% in tires and other automotive products and almost 20% in other industrial mbber products. Pigment appHcations in Western Europe and Japan are 5—6% of consumption. 

Dental riases, as discussed here, do not iaclude gargles and other liquids that are iadicated for inflammation and diseases of the throat and are unrelated to dental plaque.
