Structural drawings of carbohydrates of this type are called Haworth formulas, after the British chemist Sir Walter Norman Haworth (St Andrew s University and the University of Birmingham) Early m his career Haworth contributed to the discovery that carbohydrates exist as cyclic hemiacetals rather than m open chain forms Later he col laborated on an efficient synthesis of vitamin C from carbohydrate precursors This was the first chemical synthesis of a vitamin and provided an inexpensive route to its prepa ration on a commercial scale Haworth was a corecipient of the Nobel Prize for chem istry m 1937... [Pg.1034]

He entered the University of Birmingham in 1926 and became a pupil of Professor W. N. Haworth [Adv. Carbohydr. Chem., 6 (1951) 1-9], who (at that time) was head of the department of chemistry. He made steady progress through the university curriculum and graduated in 1929. The Research School was organized on a team basis (Haworth s so-called syndicates) and he joined... [Pg.2]

The molten copper is circulated back to the first furnace. The sulfur dioxide is converted to sulfuric acid for sale. Overall, the process uses much less energy than other processes. Developed in the 1980s by N. A. Warner at the University of Birmingham, UK, but not piloted as of 1992. [Pg.288]

Some 40 research articles resulted from Tipson s 18 years at the Mellon Institute, and they demonstrate that he was able to sustain some of his interest in carbohydrate chemistry, and he continued to study the reactions of sulfonic esters with sodium iodide. In 1945 he compiled his published work into a senior thesis for the D.Sc. degree that was awarded by the University of Birmingham. However, a considerable proportion of the research at the Mellon Institute was never published because of patent restrictions. This was particularly true for his work on carbohydrates and other organic compounds conducted after July 1952, when he was assigned to the Parke, Davis and Company Fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry to synthesize potential antiviral and anticancer agents. [Pg.423]
