University Affiliated Research Center

The Army is augmenting its pro am with a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) - Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies. The purpose of diis center of excellence is to develop unclassified nanometer-scale science and technology solutions for the soldier. MIT hosts this center, which will enqihasize... 

Of these, 70% are affiliated with universities or research centers, 10% are with environmental groups, 10% are employed in government agencies and the rest are in a variety of other positions (12). 

Tom Morton was born in Los Angeles, where his forebears (both Heilman and Morton) were employed by the motion picture industry. He received his A.B. from Harvard University in classics (Greek) and fine arts, and his Ph.D. from Caltech in chemistry under the joint direction of R. G. Bergman and J. L. Beauchamp. Since 1972, he has served on the chemistry faculties of Brown and Brandeis Universities and, from 1981, the University of Cahfornia, Riverside, where he is professor of chemistry. His research centers on the chemical consequences of internal rotation within molecules, including recognition of conformationaUy mobile structures by chemosensory systems. He is also affiliated with UCR s graduate programs in biochemistry and neuroscience. 

Mentai Retardation Facilities Construction Act (42 U.S.C. 295(a)(2)(D), 2662(5), 2675(a)(5)). This act authorizes Federal financial assistance in the construction of centers for research on mental retardation and related aspects of human development, of university-affiliated facilities for the mentally retarded and of facilities for the mentally retarded. 

Some flavor and essence research also is conducted at the university level. For example, the Monell Chemical Senses Center (affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania) is renowned worldwide for its scientific approach to a better understanding of the human senses of taste and odor.

Some centers carry out research programs within their own facilities, while others rely entirely on their university partners some are affiliated with several Ohio universities and some with only one or two some are regional while others are global. Bjorn B. Stevens is an associate professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he is responsible for a program of research and teaching with a focus on the role of the planetary boimdaty layer in large-scale circulations. He is also an affiliate scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, where he is working with the Climate and Global Dynamics and Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Divisions to imderstand and quan-... 

BARNEY CONRATH was affiliated to the Goddard Space Flight Center from 1960 until 1995 and is currently a visiting faculty member in the Cornell University Center for Radiophysics and Space Research. His research interests include the study of the thermal structure, composition, and d5mamics of planetary atmospheres. He has participated in spacecraft missions to the Earth, Mars, and the outer planets, and is currently a member of the infrared spectrometer teams on the Mars Global Surveyor and Cassini missions.
