In the United States, there is no national qualifying or licensing body for pharmacists. Licensure requirements are promulgated by State boards of pharmacy that administer examinations, issue internship requirements, and oversee the practice of pharmacy. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy serves the collective needs of the state boards. This organisation has no Hcensure authority. However, it has developed a standardized Hcensure examination (NABPLEX), which as of this writing (ca 1995) is used by 48 states (see Licensing). 

Radiopharmaceuticals may be sold either direcdy or through nuclear pharmacies. These entities, some of which are owned by manufacturers, provide radiopharmaceuticals in unit dose form. In the United States, both MaUinckrodt and Amersham own nuclear pharmacies in many cities. In addition the market is also served by Syncor, an independent nuclear pharmacy that has a nonexclusive strategic aUiance with Du Pont Pharma. 

Vertical laminar flow clean benches also are not BSCs. They may be useful, for example, in hospital pharmacies when a clean area is needed. Although these units generally have a sash, the air is usually discharged into the room under the sash, resulting in the same potential problems as the horizontal laminar flow clean benches. 

Milos Hudlicky, a native of Czechoslovakia, obtained his Ph D from the Technical University in Prague, Czechoslovakia. After spending 1948 at the Ohio State University as a UNESCO postdoctoral fellow, he taught as an assistant professor and later as an associate professor at the Technical University in Prague until 1958. He then worked as a research associate at the Research Institute of Pharmacy and Biochemistry in Prague. After the Russian occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, he moved to the United States, where he was offered a professorship at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University He has been Professor Emeritus since 1989. He received the Votocek Medal in Prague in 1992 for his work in chemistry.

Topical NSAIDs are available commercially in Canada and Europe. In the United States, these agents may be compounded in specialty pharmacies.35 These agents exert a local anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect.36-38 In soft-tissue injury such as strains and sprains, topical NSAIDs are superior in efficacy to placebo and similar to oral NSAIDs.36,37 Tissue concentrations of topical NSAIDs are high enough to produce anti-inflammatory effects, but systemic concentrations after application remain low.36-38...

In a recent seminar, a medical expert noted that the United States has given away economic and technical dominance in industry after industry to other countries. Healthcare research is one of the few areas in which the U.S. enjoys unparalleled leadership which has enormous impact on the quality of medical care. If the healthcare industry and the academic medical enterprise falters—and this is in danger right now—I think it will be an absolute disaster for this country [40]. Many in pharmacy, medicine, and other healthcare fields would concur with the above statement. The problem is that many others in the public sector do not fully appreciate what is at stake. Pharmacists have an opportunity to help tell the story, as difficult as it sometimes is to convey.
