There are a large number of processes in the chemical industries that handle a variety of suspensions of solid particles in liquids. The application of filtration techniques for the separation of these heterogeneous systems is sometimes very costly. If, however, the discrete phase of the suspension largely contains settleable particles, the separation can be effected by the operation of sedimentation. Sometimes neutralized liquid streams are recycled to the system without further unit operations however, insoluble solids such as silica, etc., are to be separated via filtration and removed as solids. Occasionally these waste solids are also to be discarded and discharged in storage bins if they are not suitable for land filling purpose. A considerable interest has been expressed in using the SBCR to carry out FTS particularly for the conversion of stranded natural gas into liquids. Currently, the Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) is utilizing a Prototype Integrated Process Unit (PIPU) system for scale-up research of the FTS. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance and activity decline of a precipitated Fe/K Fischer Tropsch Synthesis (FTS) catalyst in a revamped slurry bubble colurtm reactor (SBCR) to that of previous CSTR and SBCR rans using the same catalyst and operating conditions. The activity decline measured in the revamped SBCR system was shown to be similar to that of the CSTR experiments. The apparent activity decline in a previous SBCR run was due a transient startup effect from the slurry filtration system. [Pg.407]

Expression. Both sedimentation and filtration are suitable separation techniques when the mixture of liquid and solids is sufficiently mobile to allow pumping, or similar method of motion, of the fluid to a barrier which retains the solid but not the liquid. If such movement is not possible then separation can be accomplished by compressing the mixture under conditions which permit the liquid to escape while retaining the solid between the compressing surfaces. This technique is called expression. Design of expression equipment is varied. Batch systems usually operate by the application of hydraulic pressure in units such as the box press, pot press, curb press and cage press. Continuous expression utilises equipment such as screw presses, roller mills, and belt presses [23]. [Pg.153]
