System (1) is of the same type as other systems which have recently appeared in the literature on allelopathic competitions (Hsu and Waltman, 1998, Braselton and Waltman, 2001, Fergola et al., 2004). Of course one may employ automated library searches ( library percent reports ) to check for compound identities, but algorithms for library matching are not infallible, and mass spectral libraries are not exhaustive, thus some compounds of interest will likely not be identified. Additional dilemmas are presented by mere reliance on retention times and library percent reports to ascertain the presence of common or unique peaks from among multiple mass spectral data files. As illustrated in Table 2.1, the TICs from the GC-MS of urine from four elephants evidence a peak at essentially the same retention time, but the library search results are inconclusive as to their common identity or lack thereof. As will be seen below, our novel macros can assist in making such decisions for a large number of peaks. 

The analysis of a full tilt series of 2H NMR spectra not only allows the determination of the unique bond angle for a deuteriated methyl group, but also provides an internal check for the consistency of the spectral interpretation. In particular, simulations provide a means for the analysis of line-broadening effects, which arise from the sample mosaic spread as well as the intrinsic line width of the nuclear transition and instrumental factors. When line shapes are fitted to a full tilt series of spectra in a concerted manner and are also compared with the powder spectrum of an unoriented sample, the different contributions can be discerned. In that way an intrinsic line width of around 2 kHz is found for the spectra shown here, together with a mosaic spread between 8° and 10° for the three samples. 

The HF tester is a commercial safety tool for sensing whether an unidentified liquid contains HF [2], It shows in an exemplary way how the electrochemical properties of a silicon electrode, namely its I-V curve in HF, can be applied for sensing. The ability to dissolve an anodic oxide layer formed on silicon electrodes in aqueous electrolytes under anodic bias is a unique property of HF. HF is therefore the only electrolyte in which considerable, steady-state anodic currents are observed, as shown schematically in Fig. 3.1.
