Chlorinated benzenes have been infiequently used in RP and NP separations. Their major use has been as solvents for the analysis of ultrahigh molecular weight (UHMW) polymers when solubility in normal GPC solvents at room or slightly elevated temperatures is limited. For complete and consistent solubilization, the UHMW polymers often require temperatures in excess of 130°C. This makes handling samples difhcult, regardless of the solvent. 1,2-Dichlorobenzene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene are stable at this temperature and can successfully solubilize these analytes. The findings described above form a basis for our current work that examines the influence of the interphase on the structure and ultimately on the properties of linear polymers. In this chapter we will first show that, depending on the crystallization conditions, the amount of loops or entanglements in the interphase, and thus the deformation behavior of polymers, can be varied. We will initially consider the example of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) and the role of entanglements upon its drawability.
