Adhesion tyre cord

Where resorcinol adhesives are not suitable, resins can be prepared from modified resorcinol [128], Characteristic of these types of resins arc those used for tyre cord adhesives, in which a pure resorcinol-formaldehyde resin is used, or alternatively, alkyl resorcinol or oil-soluble resins suitable for rubber compounding are obtained by prereaction of resorcinol with fatty acids in the presence of sulfuric acid at high temperature followed by reaction with formaldehyde. Worldwide more than 90% of resorcinol adhesives are used as cold-setting wood adhesives. The other most notable application is as tyre cord adhesives, which constitutes less than 5% of the total use. [Pg.1062]

Another application of condensed tannin extracts that has proved technically successful is as a tyre cord adhesive. Both thermosetting tannin formulation [83] and tanniin esorcinol-formaldehyde formulations have been tested successfully. [Pg.192]

Phenolic novolac adhesives are extensively used in Automotive applications bonding friction material to steel in the production of brakes, clutches and drive shafts. They are also used as tyre-cord adhesives and in the manufacture of furniture, laminated board and grinding wheels. See also Wood adhesives - phenolics. [Pg.318]

Traditionally, the tyre industry has been conservative when considering changes to the belt region of a tyre because this is such an important and critical part of the tyre. Currently, cobalt systems perform well and failures in the breaker are rare, in fact the tyre is more likely to fail by catastrophic damage, e.g., puncture or just wearing away. Trends towards tyres with longer life and with the capability to be retreaded will mean that tyre cord adhesion systems will have to be designed to meet this need. [Pg.208]
