Double hearing protection A combination of both earplug and earmuff types of hearing protection devices is required for employees who have demonstrated temporary threshold shift during audiometric examination and for those who have been advised by a medical doctor to wear double protection in work areas that exceed 104 dBA. 

Hearing protection should not be used as an alternative to controlling noise by technical and organizational means. Employers should consult with their employees or their representatives on the type of hearing protection to be used. 

As part of the hazard assessment required by OSHA, you need to determine what types of hearing protection devices (HPDs) are needed by your employees. 

The enclosure type of hearing protection completely surrounds the head like an astronaut s helmet. This t e of protection is not too popular due to its cost and discomfort. 

Hearing protection is used to prevent damage to the ears caused by very loud noise. There are several types of hearing protection available but the two most common types are earplugs and ear defenders. 

This standard provides limited guidance regarding the types of hearing protection that may be used. 

If engineering controls are not effective in reducing noise to an acceptable level, then hearing protection must be used. There are two basic types of hearing protection ear plugs and ear muffs. Ear plugs are inserted into the ear canal and ear muffs cover the ears. Details to do with each are provided in the NIOSH publication referenced above. 

There are two kinds of hearing protection devices (see Figure 28-2). Muffs fit over the ears to keep sound from entering the ears. Plugs of various types fit into the ear canal. In either case there must be a good seal between a device and the head or ear canal. Plain cotton plugs are not acceptable for hearing protection, since they have little sound reduction.

There are two levels of protection commonly used by industrial workers to reduce noise levels [32] plugs (see Figure 2.20) and muffs (see Figure 2.21). One or both types may be used, depending on the noise levels. A third type of protection device is a helmet, commonly used by motorcycle drivers, which provides relatively little hearing protection and is rarely used in industry for hearing protection. Therefore, this is not considered further here. 

It may be prudent to offer employees a choice of type of personal hearing protection, subject always to the chosen type providing adequate level of protection, i.e. a suitable level of attenuation and being compatible with other protective equipment that has to be worn. 

PPE comes in many different forms and sizes. Safety glasses, hard hats, steel-toed shoes or boots, gloves, respirators, and hearing protection are all types of PPE that you may need to use to protect yourself when working in a work zone.
