Tungsten physical properties

Physical Properties. Molybdenum has many unique properties, leading to its importance as a refractory metal (see Refractories). Molybdenum, atomic no. 42, is in Group 6 (VIB) of the Periodic Table between chromium and tungsten vertically and niobium and technetium horizontally. It has a silvery gray appearance. The most stable valence states are +6, +4, and 0 lower, less stable valence states are +5, +3, and +2. [Pg.463]

Selected physical properties of rhenium are summarized ia Table 1. The metal is silvery-white and has a metallic luster. It has a high density (21.02 g/cm ). Only platinum, iridium, and osmium have higher densities. The melting poiat of rhenium is higher than that of all other elements except tungsten (mp 3410°C) and carbon (mp 3550°C). [Pg.161]

The basic corrosion behaviour of stainless steels is dependent upon the type and quantity of alloying. Chromium is the universally present element but nickel, molybdenum, copper, nitrogen, vanadium, tungsten, titanium and niobium are also used for a variety of reasons. However, all elements can affect metallurgy, and thus mechanical and physical properties, so sometimes desirable corrosion resisting aspects may involve acceptance of less than ideal mechanical properties and vice versa. [Pg.519]

Elemental composition W 79.30%, 0 20.70%. Tungsten trioxide may be identified by its physical properties or by x-ray diffraction methods. The oxide is either digested in aqua regia or dissolved in caustic alkalies, diluted, and analyzed for tungsten metal (See Tungsten). [Pg.954]

The potential window is one of the most important physical properties for the selection of a solvent for electrolysis. However, it should also be noted that the surface layer on the electrode, which is formed by chemical or electrochemical deposition, often stabilizes the system. For example, Katayama reported that a lithium ion conductive passivated layer, which is formed on the tungsten electrode as a result of reductive decomposition of the cation of the IL during the first sweeps, enables the reversible deposition and dissociation of Li metal [104], Howlett et al. have also discussed this extensively [112a-c]. [Pg.68]

Some of the physical properties of tungsten are given in Table 3 further property data ate available (12-14). For thermodynamic values, References 5,15, and 16 should he consulted. Two values ate given for the melting point. The value of 3660 K was selected as a secondary reference for the 1968 international practical temperature scale. However, since 1961, the four values that have heen reported ranged from 3680 to 3695 and averaged 3688 K. [Pg.279]

Pentacarbonyl(methoxymethylcarbene)tungsten(0) is a dull-yellow, crystalline solid mp 52°. It is appreciably more stable thermally and oxidatively than its chromium analog in the solid state at room temperature and may be stored at 5° for a period of 1 or 2 weeks without significant decomposition. It is soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, and other common laboratory solvents such as benzene, 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, chloroform, dichloromethane, and methanol it is slightly soluble in ethanol. The infrared spectrum (cyclohexane solution) has v(CO) bands at 2075, 1980, 1960, and 1947 cm"1. The nmr spectrum in chloroform-d has the methoxy proton resonance at t6.17 and the methyl proton resonance at t7.69. Other physical properties are reported in the literature.6,7... [Pg.97]
