BP Magnesium trisilicate PhEur Magnesii trisilicas USP Magnesium trisilicate 

E553(a) magnesium mesotrisilicate silicic acid, magnesium salt (1 2), hydrate. 

Moisture content magnesium trisilicate is slightly hygroscopic. At relative humidities of 15-65%, the equilibrium moisture content at 25°C is 17-23% w/w at relative humidities of 75-95%, the equilibrium moisture content is 24-30% w/w. Solubility practically insoluble in diethyl ether, ethanol (95%) and water. 

Magnesium trisilicate is used in oral pharmaceutical formulations and food products as a glidant. It is also used therapeutically as an antacid, and also for the treatment of ciprofloxacin overdose or toxicity.  

Magnesium trisilicate occurs as an odorless and tasteless, fine, white-colored powder that is free from grittiness.

Figure 9 illustrates the stabilizing effect of methylcellulose on the foams generated by a suspension of effervescent antacid granules containing magnesium trisilicate and ammonium hydroxide. Samples 1 and 2 are identical, except for 0.01% of methylcellulose contained in sample 1. The foam in sample 1 (methylcellulose) is stable even after 5 minutes, while the sample without methylcellulose has virtually no foam after 30 seconds.

The antipyretic and analgesic actions of aspirin are believed to occur in a certain area of the brain. It is also thought by some that the salicylates exert their analgesia by their effect on water balance. Aspirin is anti-inflammatory because it inhibits the biosynthesis of chemicals called prostaglandins. The irritation of the stomach lining caused by aspirin can be alleviated with the use of mild bases such as sodium bicarbonate, aluminum glycinate, sodium citrate, aluminum hydroxide, or magnesium trisilicate (a common trademark for this type of aspirin is Bufferin ).

Titration with EDTA is used in the pharmacopoeial assays of bismuthsubcarbonate, calcium acetate, calcium chloride, calcium gluconate, magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium trisilicate, bacitracin zinc, zinc chloride and zinc undecanoate. 

OTC with alginicacid (AlOH, Mg Trisilicate Gastrocote) with sodium citrate (Citro-carbonate)... 

Magnesium carbonate is most water soluble and reacts with hydrochloric acid at a slow rate. Magnesium hydroxide has low water solubility. It reacts with hydrochloric acid promptly. Magnesium trisilicate has low solubility and has the power to adsorb and inactivate pepsin and to protect the ulcer base.
