According to information from the factory at Kriimmel [28] triethylene glycol was nitrated with an acid mixed in the proportion  

For a 500 kg charge of triglycol, 1250 kg of nitrating acid were used, nitration being carried out during a period of 30 min. 

The solubility of dinitrotriethylene glycol in the spent acid is exceptionally high amounting to 8-9%. Denitrating such an acid can be hazardous in view of the presence of such a large amount of an explosive substance. Separation takes place slowly and lasts over half an hour. This is an added hazard, since dinitro-triglycol readily decomposes in the presence of spent add. It is therefore necessary to add water to the spent acid before the oily explosive material is separated, and the residual spent acid is transferred to the denitration unit. The separated oil is washed twice with water, then with a sodium carbonate solution and finally with water. A sample of washed and neutralized triethylene glycol dinitrate should withstand the heat test for 20 min at 82°C.

Four buses converted to ethanol started operation in 1979 and the engine used was an OM 352, 6 cylinder, direct injection engine rated at 96,200 watt (129 hp). The ignition improver was -hexyl nitrate [20633-11-8] which was later changed to triethylene glycol dinitrate [111-22-8] (TEGDN). 

Triethylene glycol dinitrate (TEGDN) is an explosive plasticizer of low sensitivity that has been used in some nitroceUulose-base propellant compositions, often in combination with metriol trinitrate. Butanetriol trinitrate has been used occasionally as an explosive plasticizer coolant in propellants. Its physical properties are Hsted in Table 7. 

Trimethylolethane trinitrate (metriol trinitrate) is not satisfactory as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose, and must be used with other plasticizers such as metriol triacetate. Mixtures with nitroglycerin tend to improve the mechanical properties of double-base cast propellants at high and low temperatures. Metriol trinitrate has also been used in combination with triethylene glycol dinitrate as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose. Its physical properties are Hsted in Table 7 (118-122). 

Nitropolymers composed of -O-NO2 functions and hydrocarbon structures are pyrolants that produce fuel-rich products accompanied by exothermic reaction. Typical nitropolymers are mixtures of nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin, trimethylolethane trinitrate, or triethylene glycol dinitrate, similar to the double-base propellants used in rockets and guns. Mixtures of these nitropolymers are formulated as fuel-rich pyrolants used in ducted rockets. This class of pyrolants is termed NP pyrolants.

In completely colloidal nitroglycerine and nitrodiglycol powders these nitric esters are non-volatile, explosively active solvents. Similarly, triethylene glycol dinitrate (nitrotriethylene glycol) is used as an ingredient in some powders without a volatile solvent.
