Trichomoniasis is a genital infection produced by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. Infections frequently are asymptomatic in the male, whereas in the female vaginitis characterized by a frothy pale yellow discharge is common. Relapses occur if the infected person s sexual partner is not treated simultaneously. [Pg.607]

Table 115-12 provides treatment recommendations for Trichomonas infections. The standard therapy for trichomoniasis is metronidazole 2 g orally as a single dose cure rates are comparable with the recommended alternative regimen of 500 mg twice daily for 7 days. When sexual partners are treated simultaneously, cure rates greater than 95% are reported. If sexual partners are not treated concurrently, cure rates are somewhat lower.
