Transuranium contaminated

The other three major activities within the waste isolation program are specific to particular sites. We are currently evaluating the potential of deep basalt flows below the Hanford reservation in the State of Washington. This work is managed by the Richland Operations Office and is being conducted by the Rockwell Hanford Company. An evaluation of a potential site is underway in southeast New Mexico for the location of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) which is primarily a facility for the placement of transuranium contaminated wastes (TRU) from the defense program. [Pg.5]

The DOE (Department of Energy) which is the lead agency in matters of nuclear energy, has specified three categories of waste (1) high-level, (2) transuranium contaminated, and (3)... [Pg.38]

To the extent that diet contributes to internal body burdens, a comparison of the relative plant uptake of actinides from soil is of interest. Several studies have compared the uptake of various transuranium elements by plants (17,18,19). However, studies which include U and Th are not as available. Figure 2 presents recent results for field-grown vegetation of soil originally contaminated in 1944 with soluble forms of U, Th and Pu (and daughter Am) (20.21). The crops examined include soybeans, snapbeans,... [Pg.245]

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed that "The annual alpha radiation dose rate to members of the critical segment of the exposed population as the result of exposure to transuranium elements in the general environment should not exceed either 1 millirad per year to the plumonary lung, or 3 millirad per year to the bone" (54). The USEPA also derived a soil contamination level of 0.2 pCi/m2 Tl cm depth, soil particles less than 2 mm) as a reasonable "screening" level for which the resultant dose rates to the critical segment of the exposed population could be reasonably predicted to be less than the guidance recommendations. [Pg.260]

Summary. Through an examination of the comparative behavior of the actinide elements in terrestrial and aquatic food chains, the anticipated accumulation behavior of the transuranium elements by people was described. The available data suggests that Pu, Am and Cm will not accumulate to a greater degree than U in the skeletons of individuals exposed to environmentally dispersed activity. The nature of the contamination event, the chemical and physical associations in soils and sediments, the proximity to the... [Pg.262]

Environmental monitoring of nuclear contamination, including the determination of the concentration and isotope ratios of long-lived radionuchdes, such as uranium, plutonium isotopes, thorium, Np, Se, Sr, I and others, at trace and ultratrace levels, is a fast growing and fascinating application field for inorganic mass spectrometry." " Among the environmentally important radionuclides, I, Sr, uranium and transuranium elements are of special importance. For example, the natural I inventory in the atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere has been estimated to be about 263 kg. ... [Pg.311]

II. Indications. DTPA is indicated for internal contamination with plutonium and other transuranium ions such as americium. [Pg.439]

It is assumed that the shortest-lived iodine isotope, originates only from surface contamination of the reactor core. Thus, the amount of transuranium is calculated from the " 1 concentration. [Pg.27]
