Estimating earthquake waste quantities can be challenging. As noted above, both the composition and volume of waste changes significantly depending on the built environment and the severity and effects of the specific earthquake event. Some countries, such as the United States, have developed earthquake debris volume estimation tools for use both before and after an earthquake event. While useful in the United States, these may not be completely transferrable to different countries. One of the main factors restricting the development of estimation tools in other countries is the lack of waste volume data from previous earthquake (and other disaster) events.
