PPARy is a transcription factor which controls the expression of enzymes and proteins involved in fat and glucose metabolism. More importantly, stimulation of this receptor induces differentiation of preadipocytes to adipose cells. It is believed that the formation of additional, small fat cells lowers free fatty acids and hepatic triglycerides, thereby collecting insulin resistance. [Pg.425]

Subsequent studies have confirmed that the reason for this discrepancy is that the rat is able to rapidly metabolise P-carotene to retinol in the intestine, through the action of intestinal dioxygenase. In contrast humans absorb P-carotene systemically such that plasma levels of P-carotene increase to levels not found in the rodent. A more appropriate animal model is the ferret, which shows a similar metabolism to humans. High levels of plasma P-carotene in the ferret induce the cellular transcription factors c-fos and c-jun, and squamous metaplasia is seen in the lung with or without exposure to cigarette smoke (SCF, 2000). In some ways it is surprising that aerobic bacteria have not made more use of zinc, internally, and calcium generally, especially in controls since we know they present no redox threat and we shall see that their uses increase dramatically in eukaryotes. The aerobic bacteria do have genetic connections for controlling zinc (e.g. the transcription factor ZUR and ZntR genes) but its use is not extensive.
