Traditional Chinese medicine modernization

The impact of Traditional Chinese Medicine on modern western drugs is demonstrated not only by commercialized therapeutic agents such as camptothecin or artemisinin but also by clinical candidates like huperzine A, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor to treat Alzheimer s disease [103]. Huperzine A can be isolated from both, Huperzia serrata, and H. selago [104,105]. Because huperzine A is produced only at very low levels a synthetic approach has been developed in order to provide sufficient quantities for preclinical toxicology studies and clinical trials.

At present, CDP which is used in medication control release is a hot research direction in CD science. Relevant reports are limited, especially the study on control release of traditional Chinese medicine. Researches in which j8-CDP is used as microspheres to control the release of medicine are important for development of new form and modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.

Pungent spices are common ingredients for food preparations in all cooking traditions. Spices have been used as well for a long time in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Beyond that there is a modern use of the active ingredients of spices in a variety of personal defence and law enforcement products, such as pepper spray, due to their immediate physiological irritation effects. 

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) postulates seven modes by which natural products can elicit pharmacologic effects, one when an agent is used alone, six when several are used concurrently. In the latter instance, the combined products in a prescription can interact with each other to augment or reduce potency or intrinsic activity with respect to beneficial or harmful effects. The six modes of drug interaction in Traditional Chinese Medicine can be interpreted by modern pharmacological terms 1,2) ... 

However, the most modern drugs in our armoury to fight malaria infections are derivatives of artemisinin. This natural product originates from the sweet wormwood, Artemisia annua), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, which had already been in use for malaria treatment some 1,300 years prior to quinine, albeit its active principle was only discovered in the 1970s.
