If the carbon price on the global "carbon market" settles at 41 per ton/ the value of the global carbon credits market would be over 200 billion, which is more than that of most commodities. It is argued that this trading will drive jobs to countries that do not limit carbon. The more industrialized nations emit more carbon and therefore the cap-and-trade approach would penalize them more. It is for this reason that the opponents of this approach call it "economic disarmament." The EPA in the United States estimated that a 2008 bill on cap-and-trade would have reduced the nation s GDP by about 2%. [Pg.31]

Another European initiative is to regulate airline emissions by charging a carbon tax for emissions that exceed the allowed limit. The cap-and-trade approach would allow airlines to buy or sell the difference between their actual emissions and the limit. Because of the resistance of the airlines and the lack of international standards, it will probably take years before such a system is implemented. [Pg.43]

A mandatory cap on carbon emissions, for example, could be enforced by a requirement that suppliers and users of fossil fuels hold tradable rights for each ton of carbon they produced—the so-called cap and trade approach. This would have the effect of placing a price on carbon emissions that would eventually be included in the price of all goods and services. Environmentally benign technologies, like those based on hydrogen, would... [Pg.13]

The economic benefits of the cap-and-trade approach in the United States were convincing enough so that Europeans have adopted a similar approach... [Pg.313]

The scenario discussed above assumes that similar cap-and-trade approaches are taken in the EU and the USA. However, it is far from certain that the USA will adopt a classic cap-and-trade model with an absolute cap on emissions. Cap-and-trade is an intensely political issue in the USA, which is rife with regional conflicts based on different patterns of fuel use and industrial manufacturing capacity. The recent economic dovmtum and continuing concerns in the USA about international competitiveness could lead to provisions to contain the costs of a cap-and-trade programme. Moreover, as Congress and the new US administration work through these issues, they will be likely to revisit the debate about whether a price-based policy (i.e. a carbon tax or cap-and-trade with a price cap)... [Pg.55]

The starting point of this approach is that the 3D restoration is implemented by the solution of the variational problem for the trade-off functional M , which favors in a weighted manner measured data (functional A) and a priori knowledge (functional B) ... [Pg.113]

The problem of perception complete structures is related to the problem of their representation, for which the basic requirements are to represent as much as possible the functionality of the structure, to be unique, and to allow the restoration of the structure. Various approaches have been devised to this end. They comprise the use of molecular formulas, molecular weights, trade and/or trivial names, various line notations, registry numbers, constitutional diagrams 2D representations), atom coordinates (2D or 3D representations), topological indices, hash codes, and others (see Chapter 2). [Pg.292]

Increased heat utilization does not always mean a trade-off, and many studies have shown a reduction in energy consumption as well as capital cost which in itself is a remarkable recommendation for a systematic approach to network design. [Pg.517]

This article provides a basic, step-by-step approach to problem solving in the practice and management of patents and trade secrets. The significance of aggressive patent and trade secret protection to the economic well-being of a business or organization should not be underestimated. Without patents and trade secrets, the marketplace is reduced to competition on the basis of price, which may be very difficult. [Pg.25]

Two main benefits accrue from a systems approach to materials handling and packaging. First, a trade-off of investment and operating costs is made possible nigher costs in some parts of a system become permissible in return for much lower costs in other parts. The net result is usually the lowest overall cost. If this is not the case, the reasons for incurring the higher costs can be identified and justified. The second benefit is that customers are not offended by ill-conceived packages, delivery vehicles, or product characteristics. [Pg.1911]

The other common approach for trading off fixed costs against operating costs is mixing of waste streams. In some cases, the plant operation and the... [Pg.72]

The purpose of this study is only intended to illustrate and evaluate the decision tree approach for CSP prediction using as attributes the 166 molecular keys publicly available in ISIS. This assay was carried out a CHIRBASE file of 3000 molecular structures corresponding to a list of samples resolved with an a value superior to 1.8. For each solute, we have picked in CHIRBASE the traded CSP providing the highest enantioselectivity. This procedure leads to a total selection of 18 CSPs commercially available under the following names Chiralpak AD [28], Chiral-AGP [40], Chiralpak AS [28], Resolvosil BSA-7 [41], Chiral-CBH [40], CTA-I (microcrystalline cellulose triacetate) [42], Chirobiotic T [43], Crownpak CR(-i-) [28], Cyclobond I [43], DNB-Leucine covalent [29], DNB-Phenylglycine covalent [29], Chiralcel OB [28], Chiralcel OD [28], Chiralcel OJ [28], Chiralpak OT(-i-) [28], Ultron-ES-OVM [44], Whelk-0 1 [29], (/ ,/ )-(3-Gem 1 [29]. [Pg.120]
