TOPS-MODE method

The top-down methods start by identifying the failure condition to be investigated, and then proceeds to derive those failure modes which can produce the condition (e.g. safety requirements from the base events of the FTA lead to the requirements for FMEA, hfe testing, etc.). [Pg.119]

In practice, uniform films are obtained for only a limited number of film-substrate material combinations (17). The more common experience is that the deposited material forms 3D clusters. This technique overcomes the drawbacks of unidirectional pressing and produces a charge of uniform density and homogeneity. Steam reformers are used industrially to produce syngas, i.e., synthetic gas formed of CO, CO2, 11-2, and/or hydrogen. In this section we present models for both top-fired and side-fired industrial steam reformers by using three different diffusion-reaction models for the catalyst pellet. The dusty gas model gives the simplest effective method to describe the intermediate region of diffusion and reaction in the reformer, where all modes of transport are significant. This model can predict the behavior of the catalyst pellet in difficult circumstances. Two simplified models (A) and (B) can also be used, as well as a kinetic model for both steam reforming and methanation. The results obtained for these models are compared with industrial results near the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as far from it. [Pg.484]

More recently methods have also been developed to measure the adsorbed amount on single surfaces and not onto powders. Adsorption to isolated surfaces can, for instance, be measured with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) [383]. The quartz crystal microbalance consists of a thin quartz crystal that is plated with electrodes on the top and bottom (Fig. 9.11). Since quartz is a piezoelectric material, the crystal can be deformed by an external voltage. By applying an AC voltage across the electrodes, the crystal can be excited to oscillate in a transverse shear mode at its resonance frequency. This resonance frequency is highly sensitive to the total oscillating mass. For an adsorption measurement, the surface is mounted on such a quartz crystal microbalance. Upon adsorption, the mass increases, which lowers the resonance frequency. This reduction of the resonance frequency is measured and the mass increase is calculated [384-387],... [Pg.196]
