Tire Safety

Tires are one of several key safety-related vehicle components. Improper tire pressure, either too little or too much, can lead to deterioration and eventual catastrophic failure. A tire that is worn or damaged may fail as a blowout and result in loss of control of the vehicle. The principal indicators of deterioration are tread wear, tread and sidewall damage, and air leakage. [Pg.244]

Dnring vehicle inspections, drivers must check tires to make sure that their condition is within company-established, out-of-service criteria. During an inspection or trip, the operator must monitor tires for road damage or deterioration such as tread or sidewall separation, cuts or gouges, flat spots or uneven wear, leaks (monitor tire inflation), and flat tires at duals. Operators should monitor tire inflation during extended trips. Operators should not operate on tires with inflation pressures other than those specified by the manufacturer. [Pg.244]

The 2009 edition of the IBC consists of 34 chapters, plus a chapter on the referenced standards and a few appendices, which are not a mandatory portion of the code and can be adopted (or not) separately by individual AHJs. The key chapters associated with tire safety are the following ... [Pg.622]

In the aerospace industry, too, there is an increasing demand for high-performance electrical insulation with a high degree of tire safety and light weight. Here the trend is for foamed fluoroplastics. FEP is attractive for this purpose. Fuel-tank seals are made predominantly from special perfluoroelastomers. [Pg.191]

Tire safety role prevails with relatively nonoily but cold deballasting water. To cope with the odd, unexpected slug of oil, simple oil-removing wells offering a residence time of 12 to 20 min at a limited horizontal flow rate of 200 m-h can be built (what is termed the API Special-purpose Separator). [Pg.79]

This chapter has shown some of the ways in which decisions and actions taken for safety reasons can materially affect the employee s working conditions and, conversely, the ways in which employment legislation can affect safety issues. For tire safety adviser to be able to perform his duties properly he must be aware of Ihe wider implications of the recommendations he makes, particularly in the field of working conditions. [Pg.116]

Communications. These elements should have complete support of upper management based on the fact that this is necessary for the development of implementation of loss control safety programs. All personnel must participate in a tire safety management program. [Pg.38]

Before creating a Safety Steering Team, it is important to look at the existing committee structure in your organization. You do not want to duplicate the efforts of tire safety department or some other relevant standing committee. For example, a current employee team might be able to take on the responsibility of coordinating efforts to achieve a Total Safety Culture. [Pg.446]
