The Raman spectra of WO3, 25-NiO-TiO2/30-WO3, 25-Ni0-Ti02/15-W03, 25- NiO-Ti02/5-W03, and Ti02 under ambient conditions are presented in Fig. 1. The WO3 structure is made up distorted WO3 octahedra. The major vibrational modes of WO3 are located at 808, 714, and 276 cm, and have been assigned to the W=0 stretching mode, the W=0 bending mode, and the W-O-W deformation mode, respectively [7]. Five samples with the nominal compositions shown in Table 2.8 were prepared by heating weighed mixtures of V2O3 and TiO2 in evacuated silica tubes at 1200 °C for 1-10 days. Electron diffraction patterns were taken for these samples, and the patterns on the [111] zone could be classified as Dj, D2, and Dj, as shown in Fig. 2.110. D, and D3 patterns come from the structures derived by the shear operations of (121) [0il] and (132) [O11], respectively. D2 patterns, on the other hand, show the arrays rotating between (121) and (132), which is very similar to the Ti O2 i system. Materials. The titanium dioxide powders were rutile in structure (obtained from the Titanium Division, National Lead Co., Amboy, N. J.), with nominal specific surface areas of 10 and of 100 sq. meters per gram.
