Time-scale criterion

This criterion concerns the different chronologies within which the friction experiment and the surface analysis of the contacting surfaces can be arranged. Different configurations, also called modes, can be considered on the basis of Fig. 3. Whatever the configuration, prefriction analysis must be performed in order to have complete knowledge of the experimental system prior to the tri-botest. A fundamental approach, now routinely employed in essentially all quantal treatments of molecular collisions (both inelastic and reactive), is to use rotating coordinate systems which are generalizations of those commonly used to describe rigid-body dynamics. Some electron transfer reactions have been studied in supercritical xenon. Two of them have been shown to be diffusion controlled and two are energy controlled. These reactions have been followed by changes in the optical absorption after the pulse. To carry out these studies requires that the rate of electron attachment to the solute be suffidendy fast to compete with ion recombination, which occurs on the picosecond time scale in pulse radiolysis. The solute hexafluo-robenzene satisfies this criterion the rate constant is sufficiently large (see Fig. 6) that millimolar concentrations will allow formation of anions. The ILDM technique proposed by Maas and Pope overcomes this problem by describing geometrically the optimum slow manifold of a system. The criterion for reduction is based on the time-scales of linear combinations of variables and not on species themselves.
