Documented effects In modem medicine the herb is used in a similar manner as Thymus, serpyllum. A decoction and liquid extract is recommended for internal use as an expectorant to treat bronchitis and other upper respiratory illnesses. It is used externally in compresses and baths as an analgesic to treat radiculitis and neuritis (Tolmachev 1976). The complex preparation Pertussin, containing this herb, is used as an expectorant and cough suppressant and to treat bronchitis and other upper respiratory illnesses (Kurochkin 1998). Ethanolic extracts of Thymus marschallianus exhibited antioxidative activity (Budincevic et al. 1995). Volatile oils isolated from the plant exhibited antibacterial activity against the grampositive bacterium Diplococcus pneumoniae (Oprean et al. 2007). [Pg.245]

Thymus cajntatus also yields an oil of specific gravity about 900, and closely resembling the above-described oils. It contains pinene, cymene, dipentene, thymol, carvacrol, and bomyl acetate. Its phenol-content is about 6 per cent. A similar oil is obtained from Thymus camphoratus. A somewhat different oil is obtained from a variety of Thymus serpyllum oitratus or citriodorus). This oil has an odour recalling thyme, lemon, and geranium. Its spedfic gravity is 0 890 to 0 920 and its optical rotation - lO" to - 20. It contains only a very small amount of phenols, but cymene and a sesquiterpene have been isolated from it. [Pg.246]

The north-south gradient was also evident in the concentration of the most abundant chemotype, which was shown to consist of linalool [19] and its acetate. Most frequent in Greenland, Iceland, and Norway (90-100%), it was present in only 40% of plants collected in Scotland, and in only ca. 5% of plants from southern sites. This finding paralleled the observations of Stahl-Biskup and Laakso (1990) that a similar north-south trend exists in the oils of Thymus ser-pyllum subspecies serpyllum and tanaensis in Finland. The opposite trend was observed with y-terpinene, which was present in southern populations but absent from those from the northern sites. [Pg.49]
