Thixotropic paints

Alkanolamine Chelates. Alkanolamine chelates, which are prepared by reaction of tetraalkyl titanates with one or more alkanolamines, are used primarily in cross-linking water-soluble polymers (qv) (see Alkanolamines) (104). The products are used in thixotropic paint emulsion paints, in hydrauhc fracturing and drilling of oil and gas wells, and in many other fields. The stmcture of... [Pg.147]

They have found use as hardeners-eum-flexibilisers for epoxide resins (see Chapter 26) and are of interest in the production of thixotropic paints and adhesives. Related higher molecular weight materials are tough and flexible and find use as hot melt adhesives (Versalons). [Pg.507]

Thixotropic Paint a paint which while free-flowing and easy to manipulate under a brush, sets to a gel within a short time when it is allowed to remain at rest. Because of these qualities a thixotropic paint is less likely to drip from a brush than other types and can be applied in rather thicker films without running or sagging. [Pg.684]

Thixotropy This refers to the reversible time-dependent decease of viscosity. When the system is sheared for some time the viscosity decreases, but when the shear is stopped (the system is left to rest) the viscosity of the system is restored. Practical examples of systems that show thixotropy include paint formulations (sometimes referred to as thixotropic paints), tomato ketchup, and some hand creams and lotions. [Pg.427]

Paints are rarely Newtonian in their flow behavior. They are usually found to be thixotropic, pseudoplastic, and sometimes dilatant. Paints are thixotropic if there is initial resistance to viscosity loss by agitation, if there is a reduction in viscosity with continued agitation, and if there is a return to the original viscosity after the paint is no longer agitated. A pseudoplastic paint is similar to a thixotropic paint except there is no initial resistance to viscosity loss or no yield factor. A dilatant paint differs because the viscosity increases or shows resistance to flow as the agitation is increased. Mill bases are usually slightly dilatant and are intended to be that way. [Pg.1299]

Plastic paint n. A heavy-bodied, thixotropic paint which can be worked after application, by stripping or by paint rollers having a textured pattern, to produce various textured or pattern surfaces. [Pg.729]

Structured paint n. Paint having a gel-like consistency which breaks down under the kind of shear exerted during brushing or roller application and re-forms when the shearing force is removed. When there is a time lag between the removal of the shearing force and the start of gel re-formation, the paint is said to be thixotropic. The thixotropic structure can vary from a very light gel to the fully gelled thixotropic paints of the non-drip type. [Pg.937]
