Liquid photo-curable resin is used in UV nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL).i Basic ideas of photopolymerization are shown in Chapter 1. Liquid photo-curable resins change from liquid to solid by UV irradiation. The change is produced by polymerization of a monomer or oligomer constituted in the resin. Initiators induce polymerization by UV irradiation. Resins of UV-NIL are classified into several types by polymerization systems radical polymerization, ion polymerization, and ene-thiol polymerization. Details of those systems are described in below. [Pg.126]

Starters. Nearly any compound having an active hydrogen can be used as starter (initiator) for the polymerization of PO. The common types are alcohols, amines, and thiols. Thus in Figure 2 ROH could be RNH2 or RSH. The fiinctionahty is derived from the starter, thus glycerol results in a triol. Some common starters are shown in Table 4. The term starter is preferred over the commonly used term initiator because the latter has a slightly different connotation in polymer chemistry. Patterns of ordered molecular islands surrounded by disordered molecules are common in Langmuir layers, where even in zero surface pressure molecules self-organize at the air—water interface. The difference between the two systems is that in SAMs of trichlorosilanes the island is comprised of polymerized surfactants, and therefore the mobihty of individual molecules is restricted. This lack of mobihty is probably the principal reason why SAMs of alkyltrichlorosilanes are less ordered than, for example, fatty acids on AgO, or thiols on gold. The coupling of polymerization and surface anchoring is a primary source of the reproducibihty problems. Small differences in water content and in surface Si—OH group concentration may result in a significant difference in monolayer quahty. Alkyl silanes remain, however, ideal materials for surface modification and functionalization apphcations, eg, as adhesion promoters (166—168) and boundary lubricants (169—171). [Pg.538]

In general, rubber manufacturers balance thiol reactivity and odor. The stmcture of the thiol plays a significant role in its abiUty to be transported within the polymer matrix, particularly in emulsion polymerizations, ie, mixed water—monomer emulsion. The odor of light thiols is generally too strong for most mbber manufacturers, as it is generally hard to remove residual odors from polymers. [Pg.14]

Often a chain-transfer agent is added to vinyl acetate polymerizations, whether emulsion, suspension, solution, or bulk, to control the polymer molecular weight. Treatment of thiiranes with lithium aluminum hydride gives a thiolate ion formed by attack of hydride ion on the least hindered carbon atoms (76RCR25), The mechanism is 5n2, inversion occurring at the site of attack. Polymerization initiated by the thiolate ion is a side reaction and may even be the predominant reaction, e.g. with 2-phenoxymethylthiirane. Use of THF instead of ether as solvent is said to favor polymerization. Tetrahydroborates do not reduce the thiirane ring under mild conditions and can be used to reduce other functional groups in the presence of the episulfide. Thiols react more rapidly with nucleophilic radicals than with electrophilic radicals. They have very large Ctr with S and VAc, but near ideal transfer constants (C - 1.0) with acrylic monomers (Table 6.2). Aromatic thiols have higher C,r than aliphatic thiols but also give more retardation. This is a consequence of the poor reinitiation efficiency shown by the phenylthiyl radical. Thiol-ene polymerization was first reported in 1938.220 In this process, a polymer chain is built up by a sequence of thiyl radical addition and chain transfer steps (Scheme 7.17). The thiol-ene process is unique amongst radical polymerizations in that, while it is a radical chain process, the rate of molecular weight increase is more typical of a step-growth polymerization. Polymers ideally consist of alternating residues derived from the diene and the dithiol.
