Thin layer chromatography provides a rapid, easy and cost-effective means for screening for cannabis materials and making comparisons between seizures. The cannabinoids are readily oxidized and so should be prepared for TLC in a solvent in which they are stable. As with the swabs for trace samples, ethanol satisfies this criterion at this stage. [Pg.59]

Christie (1990), in an overview of TLC, asks the question Has thin-layer chromatography had its day . Comparison of this simple technique with the newer and more sophisticated high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) makes TLC look obsolete. However, as also agreed by the author, traditional TLC is still used and is likely to be around for many years to come. Between the years 1990 and 1996 TLC has found application in several fields, and publications relate to food (18%), medical, clinical and biological applications (26%), pharmaceuticals (25%), environmental studies (11%), detection (14%) and chemical synthesis monitoring (6%) (Weins and Hauck, 1995). It is estimated that there were between 500-900 articles per... [Pg.1]

Such alkaloid fractions were analyzed by thin-layer chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (80). The studies have been carried out in a manner designed to facilitate quantitative and qualitative comparisons of alkaloid profiles between populations and species of dendrobatid frogs and other amphibians. [Pg.253]
