Thermowells

Typical equipment made from tantalum includes heat exchangers, reaction vessels liners, thermowells, and heating elements or heat shields for high temperature vacuum sintering furnaces. Tantalum fabricated parts are found in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, explosives, insecticides, dyes, acidic baskets for silver cyanide barrel platers, and in hydrochloric and hydrobromic acid condensers. [Pg.330]

Dynamics of Process Measurements Especially where the measurement device is incorporated into a closed loop control configuration, dynamics are important. The dynamic characteristics depend on the nature of the measurement device, and also on the nature of components associated with the measurement device (for example, thermowells and sample conditioning equipment). The term mea-.sui ement system designates the measurement device and its associated components. [Pg.758]

Time constants. Where there is a capacity and a throughput, the measurement device will exhibit a time constant. For example, any temperature measurement device has a thermal capacity (mass times heat capacity) and a heat flow term (heat transfer coefficient and area). Both the temperature measurement device and its associated thermowell will exhibit behavior typical of time constants. [Pg.758]

Where the manufacturer of the measurement device does not supply the associated eqiiipment (thermowells, sample conditioning equipment, and the like), the user must incorporate the characteristics of these components to obtain the dynamics of the measurement system. [Pg.758]

An additional complication is that most dynamic data are stated for configurations involving reference materials such as water, air, and so on. The nature of the process material will affect the dynamic characteristics. For example, a thermowell will exhibit different characteristics when immersed in a viscous organic emulsion than when immersed in water. It is often difficult to extrapolate the available data to process conditions of interest. [Pg.758]

Vahdation of the measurements may require the simultaneous measurement of pressure and temperature. Typical sample locations do not have thermowells and pressure indicators. Consequently, modifications will be reqmred to facilitate validation. [Pg.2559]

Analysts should review the technical basis for uncertainties in the measurements. They should develop judgments for the uncertainties based on the plant experience and statistical interpretation of plant measurements. The most difficult aspect of establishing the measurement errors is estabhshing that the measurements are representative of what they purport to oe. Internal reactor CSTR conditions are rarely the same as the effluent flow. Thermocouples in catalyst beds may be representative of near-waU instead of bulk conditions. Heat leakage around thermowells results in lower than actual temperature measurements. [Pg.2563]

On the other hand, this type of cooling permits the study of increasing or decreasing temperature profiles in the jacket and their influence on the inner temperature profile, reactor performance, and stability. For this type of study a reactor tube is needed that is large enough to accommodate an inner thermowell holding a multiple thermocouple assembly. [Pg.41]

Thermowells must be used for safety. The wells slow things down. The wells should be filled with a conducting oil like kerosene, or if not fill-able, with conducting grease. No one wants to measure thermowell air ambient temperature. See Figure 10-10 for a thermowell detail. [Pg.432]
