Kinetic as weU as thermodynamic problems are encountered in fluorination. The rate of reaction must be decelerated so that the energy Hberated may be absorbed or carried away without degrading the molecular stmcture. The most recent advances in direct fluorination ate the LaMar process (18—20) and the Exfluot process (21—24), which is practiced commercially by 3M. 

Plots of the properties of various substances as well as tables and charts are extremely useful in solving engineering thermodynamic problems. Two-dimensional representations of processes on P-V, T-S, or H-S diagrams are especially useful in analyzing cyclical processes. The use of the P-V diagram was illustrated earlier. A typical T-S diagram for a Rankine vapor power cycle is depicted in Figure 2-36. 

In some cases besides the governing algebraic or differential equations, the mathematical model that describes the physical system under investigation is accompanied with a set of constraints. These are either equality or inequality constraints that must be satisfied when the parameters converge to their best values. The constraints may be simply on the parameter values, e.g., a reaction rate constant must be positive, or on the response variables. The latter are often encountered in thermodynamic problems where the parameters should be such that the calculated thermophysical properties satisfy all constraints imposed by thermodynamic laws. We shall first consider equality constraints and subsequently inequality constraints. 

Here Jta(x) denotes the a-th component of the stationary vector x of the Markov chain with transition matrix Q whose elements depend on the monomer mixture composition in microreactor x according to formula (8). To have the set of Eq. (24) closed it is necessary to determine the dependence of x on X in the thermodynamic equilibrium, i.e. to solve the problem of equilibrium partitioning of monomers between microreactors and their environment. This thermodynamic problem has been solved within the framework of the mean-field Flory approximation [48] for copolymerization of any number of monomers and solvents. The dependencies xa=Fa(X)(a=l,...,m) found there in combination with Eqs. (24) constitute a closed set of dynamic equations whose solution permits the determination of the evolution of the composition of macroradical X(Z) with the growth of its length Z, as well as the corresponding change in the monomer mixture composition in the microreactor. 

By analogy with Hamilton s principle of least action, the simplest proposition that could solve the thermodynamic problem is that equilibrium also depends on an extremum principle. In other words, the extensive parameters in the equilibrium state either maximize or minimize some function. 

In general, the formulation of the problem of vapor-liquid equilibria in these systems is not difficult. One has the mass balances, dissociation equilibria in the solution, the equation of electroneutrality and the expressions for the vapor-liquid equilibrium of each molecular species (equality of activities). The result is a system of non-linear equations which must be solved. The main thermodynamic problem is the relation of the activities of the species to be measurable properties, such as pressure and composition. In order to do this a model is needed and the parameters in the model are usually obtained from experimental data on the mixtures involved. Calculations of this type are well-known in geological systems O) where the vapor-liquid equilibria are usually neglected. 

As the state of a thermodynamic system generally is a function of more than one independent variable, it is necessary to consider the mathematical techniques for expressing these relationships. Many thermodynamic problems involve only two independent variables, and the extension to more variables is generally obvious, so we will limit our illustrations to functions of two variables. 

Difficulties develop if the thermometer is exposed to certain types of radiation. However, calculations indicate that under normal circumstances, these radiation fields raise the temperature by only about 10 °C, which is a quantity that is not detectable even with the most sensitive current-day instruments [4]. Similarly, we shall neglect relativistic corrections that develop at high velocities, for we do not encounter such situations in ordinary thermodynamic problems. 

The procedure for numerical integration (7) is analogous to that for differentiation. Again we will cite an example of its use in thermodynamic problems, the integration of heat capacity data. Let us consider the heat capacity data for solid n-heptane listed in Table A.4. A graph of these data (Fig. A.3) shows a curve for which it may not be convenient to use an analytical equation. Nevertheless, in connection with determinations of certain thermodynamic functions, it may be desirable to evaluate the integral... 

Volume swelling measurements have produced erratic results even under the most carefully controlled conditions. One important contribution in this regard is the work of Bills and Salcedo (8). These investigations showed that the binder-filler bond could be completely released with certain solvent systems and that the volume swelling ratio is independent of the filler content when complete release is achieved. Some thermodynamic problems exist, however, when such techniques are used to measure crosslink density quantitatively. First, equilibrium swelling is difficult to achieve since the fragile swollen gel tends to deteriorate with time even under the best conditions. Second, the solubility of the filler (ammonium perchlorate) and other additives tends to alter the solution thermodynamics of the system in an uncontrollable manner. Nonreproducible polymer-solvent interaction results, and replicate value of crosslink density are not obtained. 

How is a concentration gradient of protons transformed into ATP We have seen that electron transfer releases, and the proton-motive force conserves, more than enough free energy (about 200 lcJ) per mole of electron pairs to drive the formation of a mole of ATP, which requires about 50 kJ (see Box 13-1). Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation therefore poses no thermodynamic problem. But what is the chemical mechanism that couples proton flux with phosphorylation ... 

Alcoholic fermentation, exemplified here by the reduction of CH20 to CH3OH, can occur with pE < —3.0. Because the concomitant oxidation of CHoO to C02 has pE°(W) = —8.2, there is no thermodynamic problem. 

We have implied in Section 1.1 that certain properties of a thermodynamic system can be used as mathematical variables. Several independent and different classifications of these variables may be made. In the first place there are many variables that can be evaluated by experimental measurement. Such quantities are the temperature, pressure, volume, the amount of substance of the components (i.e., the mole numbers), and the position of the system in some potential field. There are other properties or variables of a thermodynamic system that can be evaluated only by means of mathematical calculations in terms of the measurable variables. Such quantities may be called derived quantities. Of the many variables, those that can be measured experimentally as well as those that must be calculated, some will be considered as independent and the others are dependent. The choice of which variables are independent for a given thermodynamic problem is rather arbitrary and a matter of convenience, dictated somewhat by the system itself. 

We see from these equations that we deal with a large number of variables in thermodynamics. These variables are E, S, H, A, G, P, V, T, each nh and two variables for each additional work term. In any given thermodynamic problem only some of these variables are independent, and the rest are dependent. The question of how many independent variables are necessary to define completely the state of a system is discussed in Chapter 5. For the present we take the number of moles f each component, the generalized coordinate associated with each additional work term, and two of the four variables S, T, P, and V as the independent variables. The thermodynamic functions have been defined in terms of the energy and the entropy. These, in turn, have been defined in terms of differential quantities. The absolute values of these functions for systems in given states are not known.1 However, differences in the values of the thermodynamic functions between two states of a system can be determined. We therefore may choose a certain state of a system as a standard state and consider the differences of the thermodynamic functions between any state of a system and the chosen standard state of the system. The choice of the standard state is arbitrary, and any state, physically realizable or not, may be chosen. The nature of the thermodynamic problem, experience, and convention dictate the choice. For gases the choice of standard state, defined in Chapter 7, is simple because equations of state are available and because, for mixtures, gases are generally miscible with each other. The question is more difficult for liquids and solids because, in addition to the lack of a common equation of state, limited ranges of solubility exist in many systems. In this chapter, we briefly review the essentials of thermodynamics and its principal applications. We cover the first and second laws and discuss the most important thermodynamic properties and their dependence on pressure, temperature, and composition, being the main process variables. Change in composition can be brought about with or without the transformation of phases or chemical species. The common structure of the solution of a thermodynamic problem is discussed. 

The design of chemical reactors encompasses at least three fields of chemical engineering thermodynamics, kinetics, and heat transfer. For example, if a reaction is run in a typical batch reactor, a simple mixing vessel, what is the maximum conversion expected This is a thermodynamic question answered with knowledge of chemical equilibrium. Also, we might like to know how long the reaction should proceed to achieve a desired conversion. This is a kinetic question. We must know not only the stoichiometry of the reaction but also the rates of the forward and the reverse reactions. We might also wish to know how much heat must be transferred to or from the reactor to maintain isothermal conditions. This is a heat transfer problem in combination with a thermodynamic problem. We must know whether the reaction is endothermic or exothermic.

The application of thermodynamics to flow processes is also based on conservation of mass and on the first and second laws. The addition of the linear momentum principle makes fluid mechanics a broader field of study. The usual separation between thermodynamics problems and fluid-mechanics problems depends on whether this principle is required forsolution. Those problems whose solutions depend only On conservation of mass and on the laws of thermodynamics are commonly set apart from the study of fluid mechanics and are treated in courses on thermodynamics.
