Martens-Lobenhoffer et al. [119] used chiral HPLC-atmospheric pressure photoionization tandem mass-spectrometric method for the enantio-selective quantification of omeprazole and its main metabolites in human serum. The method features solid-phase separation, normal phase chiral HPLC separation, and atmospheric pressure photoionization tandem mass spectrometry. The internal standards serve stable isotope labeled omeprazole and 5-hydroxy omeprazole. The HPLC part consists of Agilent 1100 system comprising a binary pump, an autosampler, a thermo-stated column component, and a diode array UV-VIS detector. Specimens from biopsies, excisions or resections must be handled as soon as possible to preserve the tissue for FISH. Specimens should be preserved in 10% neutral-buffered formalin (NBF), preferably as 3-4 mm blocks fixed for 18-24 hours followed by dehydration and embedment in paraffin. Sections should be cut into 4-6 pm, mounted on positively charged slides (e.g. SuperFrost Plus, Mentel-Glaser, Thermo Scientific) and adhered to the slide by baking at 60°C for approximately 1 hour.

It is also a modular system of detectors and autosamplers, which allows it to be customised. Modular systems are common now, e.g. Cecil Instruments produces both HPLC and ion chromatography systems and various detectors can be accommodated including UV-Vis, refractive index, conductivity and fluorescence.

Thermo Scientific has introduced the 2D (or linear) liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ MS/MS) ion trap mass spectrometer [11], known as the LTQ. The ion injection efficiency has been improved dramatically in the linear ion trap. In addition, ions in a linear ion trap are distributed along the central axis, rather than concentrated in the ion trap center for a 3D ion trap thus, both charge capacity and sensitivity in a linear ion trap have been increased significantly. Although at the present time there is neither commercial linear ion trap/GC/MS nor commercial linear ion trap/GC/ MS/MS instruments, a commercial version of a linear ion trap/GC/MS is expected to appear in the near future.
