The first-year study in Railroad Valley, conducted in 1984, consisted of a regional lineament evaluation made from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery and regional soil-gas probe sampling to identify areas of significant hydrocarbon seepage (Jones, et al. 1985). Railroad Valley was chosen for this research study because of the excellent surface expression of structural features. 

The Aircraft Thematic Mapper Simulator (NS-OOl) was used to examine spectral reflectance over the Patrick Draw oil field in southwest Wyoming (Lang et al., 1985a) and over the Lost River gas field in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia (Lang et al., 1985b). The spectral characteristics of the seven visible and near-infrared NS-OOl bands are summarised in Table 7-II.

In the decades that have passed between the first space-bome scarmers mapping clouds at night and the Thematic Mapper are many generations of radiometers, often launched for weather observations, but more recently also for geological, agricultural, hydrological, and land use purposes.

For high resolution mapping instruments, such as the Thematic Mapper, with a number of individual charmels and a short observation time per resolved spatial element, the bit rate becomes large, 84.9 Mbit s The same is tme for high resolution spectrometers, such as the ATMOS, where the multiplex factor, M, is large and r is small (15.76 Mbit s ). For missions to the outer planets the bit rate is limited by the large coimnunication distance consequently, the telemetry rate becomes an important design parameter.
